I made my exhaust smoke.. and I saw smoke coming out of the manifold.. that worked for me... To make it smoke, I used seafoam, which will clean away carbon deposits... I just put a hose from the vacuum t into the canand let it lift it up.. (put it in, take it out, put it in, take it out so I didn't flood the motor)... I got some smoke while it was doing that.. but after I let it sit like you are supposed to, and then restarted it.. I had lots of smoke.. mostly from the exhaust pipe.. but I had a bunch from the leaking exhaust manifold.. (took me 10 minutes to change it out... It may take you longer as I don't have inner fenderwells, so I can just rear over the tire to touch the exhaust manifold)
Also, check for stupid little things too...
for exaple...
is a spark plug loose (been there, done that)..
Is a spark plug fouled (usually the #5 will be, which also usually means the lower intake is leakign)...
