I've got a 4.0L 2001 Sport. My transmission recently lost 3rd gear and reverse and I had been thinkin about doing a motor and tranny swap anyway. What can I put in here that will fit. i want to stay with for, and sadly, I'm used to the big ford trucks, but I dont to much know about the explorer enough. I know I can fit a mustang 5.0 in it, what else? would the 5.4L from the lightning fit? any suggestions? or what can you tell me about making sure this motor doesn't live up to its nickname as the "exploder", while still modifying it

Keep in mind that a bigger engine is heavier, and uses more gas. A swap means that you will have to get a wiring harness, computer, exhaust, and fuel lines so it's not an easy job. Just repair the transmission, and keep the motor if it's not giving you any problems.

I know its mean more gas and weight, but the thing is, I'mso used to v8's. I don't mind the work being that its so easy to get the wiring harness, ecu, and fuel lines. I just have no idea what can fit into this thing. The v6 in the explorer has a reputation as being the "exploder" and I honestly dont see to much potential for this motor.
