Anyone tell me what might be the problem when I activate the cruise control and the engine dies?
Not a good thing to happen at highway speeds when everything quits.

Help!

Thanks BrooklynBay. No vacuum leak.
More info for you.
Vehicle recently would not run.....drove it home from the mechanic's after some mechanical work on the brakes, etc. and it was fine that night too. Next morning when it was very cold, it would start, then the rpms just bottomed out and it quit. Started every time but same thing happened. The only thing the mech had replaced in the engine compartment was the brake pressure switch.
Of course I took it back to him and the search started...no codes showed up but when he tested the Mass Air Flow sensor, it apparently showed a problem. I went to pick it up and he said they had it running great. When I went to start it, same problem, started but then quit. Again it would restart fine but then quit.
Oh yeah, here's another twist, it ran fine in reverse but not neutral or drive.
Left it with him of course and they put in a recycled/new computer. Of course then had to send it to FORD to have the keys coded to the new computer.
Anyway it then ran very well. I ran it for several days, no problem.
NOW, out on the highway, when you engage the cruise control the engine shuts down the same way it did before. However, it starts well and runs fine .....just can't use the cruise. What the heck???
After some research on the web, we now find out that there is a recall out about the brake pressure switch but the problem is it causes fires when the brake fluid and wires short out. This is not my current problem but if I disconnect the cruise altogether, it is supposed to solve that problem until I get the recall notice. Problem is of course, still no cruise.

Any ideas now???

stalling?

Had that happen when running under cruise control at 50km/hr. Dealer replaced TP sensor and reprogrammed the PCM. THat was in NOV 2004.Did not happen again,

what kind of truck do you have, I know that ford had a recall just within the last year on the cruis control on the 99 explorers. it was starting fires in the dash.

Hi again all,
Thanks for all of your input. You guys are good.
I have a 2002 Explorer XLS .
I have not replaced the IAC yet but had heard that it could have been the problem before all the other work had been done. It didn't show up on the scan and it ran good after the other work was done (MAF and computer (PCM?)).
What is the TP sensor?

Snow is disappearing and looking forward to using the cruise on the dry highway.............:)

what kind of truck do you have,

mine is a 2004 Eddie Bauer 4.0, 4x4 - this is my 4th year with this truck and I'm glad to say I have no issues with it. In fact I am very satisfied. This one shifts smooth as silk - and drives like a charm.
