we just bought a 2000 explorer sport with only 33,000 miles and a 4.0 liter ohv engine.automatic trans with 4 by 4.2 days after i got it home i noticed a rattling in the engine, seems to come from underneath.i went under with it running and cant pinpoint wether its the motor or tranny.whatever it is i can feel it in the gas peddle driving down the road.almost feels like a knock in the motor but i dont think its that.sounds like a couple balls rattling in a can when you first start it in the morning.almost like a deisel motor sound.after it warms up it kinda goes away but i know its there and i can feel it in the pedal.it didnt do this when i test drove it.of course it came without a warranty.14 grand for this truck plus my trade of my good working 97 sport.now what?this is most noticable in the cold mornings ..or the first start of the day.my 97 never made this noise.the dealer says bring it in but they just want to bilk more money out of me.i also had to replace the thermostat within 24 hours of buying the truck....geeze.........so what are the 00m12 things and stuff i see on this forum?
can any of this bullitens help me?please let me know ,they want me to bring the truck in monday and i want to go prepared for them...thanks everyone.....joe

hi the oom12 recall is a new updated tensioner for LH timing chain and is free if milage under 72k it will fix the noise

That program is only for the SOHC, not the OHV.

sorry didn't see he had ohv engine some ohv engines do have a marbleing nosie in tem do to short skirt pistons ford has a ssm out on it 99' to 00' 4.0l ohv engines won't hurt engine life

I do agree with that kentford. Although I have heard from other sources it is the wrist pins that make the noise.

Anyway, it's probably just an annoyance.

yes guys its a ohv engine.so whats this ssm thing?where do you guys get this info?maybe theres something in there i can use to get this looked at for free?i hope so ... i feel so jilted.......yeah sure they will look at it.......to the tune of maybe a few more hundred.....should have turned em down maybe and shopped around ?well let me know what you guys can find out for me about this.the woman on the service desk phone asked me if it was a cold start problem, like they knew already?lol....maybe this is a problem shared with other explorers?let me know ,....thanks.................joe

the woman on the service desk phone asked me if it was a cold start problem, like they knew already?lol....

She probably was thinking it was a SOHC.... They get a lot of those.....

Just about every newer OHV 4.0 I had the pleasure to listen to sounds like a Powerstroke Diesel.
