Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions that may be simple, but I don't know the answers :) I have a 94 ford explorer sport (V6 4.0L, 5 speed manual), that has close to 182k miles on it (95% hwy miles). Everything seems to run fine, but today I noticed when I rev the engine and release the gas, a clicking/knocking sound happens briefly. And secondly (the question i'm wondering most), how long do engines like mine last and should I do a rebuild? What all happens in a rebuild? Sorry for all the questions, but recently my interest in cars (especially my explorer!) has skyrocketed and I want to finally know what goes on.

Thanks a lot!

In a general rebuild, the entire engine is dissasembled and cleaned. The cylinders are inspected, and if needed, honed (then you need new pistons as well) The crank gets turned, and the cam inspected. It gets all new bearings and seals, and put back together. New piston rings too...I just did a rebuild on a 4.3 Chevy, which is pretty similar to our OHV X motors, and it took me about 6 hours to assemble it, and about 15 hours into the entire rebuild. Any questions, just ask!
