engine removal?

Thinking of removing engine to do chains.
Taken out and replaced a number of engines from vehicles before and always learn the hard way on how best to do it. ie If I had to do it again, it would have been so much easier/quicker if I had known that!
Anyone out there who has had engine out and back in got any words of wisdom on what they learned as they did it?
Im looking to get it out in as big a lump as possible - removal as little ancilliaries as possible.
How long did it take? Did Gearbox come out as a unit or leave box in place?

hi mate janolsson is the man when it comes to this as ive got to take mine out soon and he sent me an email on how to do it and what to look for ill copy it for you and pm it too you-i do know that your have to take ancilliaries off best to do this anyway if your doing the chains and rad out and that you can leave the gearbox in

oh one other thing, unless you already know, DO NOT spin a SOHC motor the opposite way it fires. you will (or can) put the motor out of time, and when you go to fire it up for the first time you will bend the valves. i found that out the hard way.

Hopefully jayjay101 has sent you the list of things to look out for.
My main advice is get some good penetrant on the downpipe to manifold bolts for a few days b4. Also do the conections for the fuel line with penetrant. It may even be worth taking it to a friendly exhaust place to see if they can loosen the exhaust bolts with air tools for you.

As for taking of the ancillaries, you don't need to take all off. Just remove the rad and top/bottm hoses and the heater hoses and valves. Then remove the steering pump and lines reservoir. This will give you access to the bolts for the bracket for the aircon. with the battery out you can swing the aircon comp (still attached to the bracket) into the battery tray.
In the pic below you can see everything else is still attached.

You can see i've used some old seatbelt to lift the engine. I found this worked extremely well as i did not have to worry about a chain damaging the intake or dpfe sensor or anything.
Make sure the crane you use is a good one. The sealey 350 is a strong enough engine stand.
Last tip is get someone to help you when removing/replacing the bonnet, its a heavy bit of ferrite.
