Ford Explorer XLT 1993
Hello Friends,

Can you help me? I need to take out the engine of my Explorer XLT 93 to repair it. Must I take out the transmision too? Can you explain me what I must do?

Thanks very much and best regards

You are going to want a Chiltons for this (or some other repair book).. Lots of little things have to happen to pull the motor..

You don't "need" to pull the trans "out" but you do need to remove the trans from the motor. In other words, don't pull the engine and trans as a unit.. Its very hard to get it out and normally you can't get the engine/trans to move to the right angle to get it out like that.

Its been a few years since I pulled an explorer engine so I can't remember the exact order to get it out. There have been a few motor swaps done on here recently so hopefully one of those guys who still have it fresh in their mind will chime in.

I edited my post above since I got myself confused as I wrote it and gave bad info...

Yes, use a book for step by step.

Assuming you have an automatic transmission - I pulled an engine a few years ago from a Ranger (same engine/transmission as my Explorer - it's pretty much identical). I didn't pull the transmission. But I did need a long reach 3/8 drive ratchet to get to the upper bell housing bolts behind and below the intake manifold. It's a small space there between the firewall and the engine.

Now that you mention it, I didn't "need" to remove the trans. I got myself confused because we did it but it was for other reasons (plus it was early in the morning when I wrote my post above).

What I should have said is you need to remove the engine without the trans attached.. I'll fix my post above...

Hello Awood, hello Mark,
Thanks a lot for your help. Yesterday was a hard day...engine was pulled.
One piston is in a very bad condition, also the oil piston ring.
Today I will clean the block to send it to a lathe maker.
Later I will tell you about results.
Best regards
