My beloved 1996 EB 4.0L engine finally gave up at 377K miles. I took the truck to a recommended shop and had a Jasper rebuilt engine installed.
Since the replacement was completed, I have had major problems, all electrical in nature. The biggest problem is that every time I start the car, fuse 24, the starter relay fuse, blows. If I replace the fuse right away, it blows as soon as I turn the key and I have to jump start the car at the solenoid on the fender well to get it started. Once the truck has a chance to sit for at least an hour it will usually start with the key but the same fuse 24 blows in the process.
Also, when I got the car back the Check Engine and O/D Off lights are on solid. There are no codes, the car runs fine. Also, the odometer is not counting miles properly. The shop manager insists that the problems with the dash lights and the odometer are a "coincidence". The little computer in the console works fine. It counts miles correctly. I tested the odo against a GPS receiver so I am sure I am correct.
I have taken the truck back to the shop several times. I can assure everyone that all those things worked fine before the repair was done. Each time they have returned the car to me claiming they can't reproduce the starting problem.
The best I have ever gotten is perhaps 6-8 starts before the #24 fuse blows.
I have changed out the solenoid on the fender panel twice myself. I am sure it's wired properly.
My theory is that they damaged or did not reconnect something or somethings properly when they installed the replacement engine.
I am not sure what to do next. I'm not much of a mechanic but I can handle most anything that's explained to me. How should I proceed here? Is there anything I can perhaps do myself?
Also, I know a lot of paid mechanics are on here. How should I deal with the shop on this? I'm going back Monday after a week of jump starting because we didn't have access to a backup vehicle.
One last thing, once it's started it runs beautifully.
Thanks!
