I have a 92 explorer with 140k on it, and I'm starting to look into replaceing it. So I started looking around at prices when I found that the 4.0 x that is in my 92 is different from the 4.0 e that is available in the 97s. The 4.0x is 160hp compaired to the 4.0e which is 205hp. Now as far as I can find out the 4.0e has a different crankshaft bumping up the compression up to 9.7:1. Now heres my question, can I replace my 92 4.0x with a 4.0x with out major modification?

The 97+ 4.0L has either a single overhead cam, or a dual overhead cam setup (i don't recall) vs. the 4.0L Pushrod engines. That is where the 205 hp comes from vs the old 160.
As far as the crank goes, increasing the stroke increases your torque, but they would have also had to change the bore size (smaller) to keep the engine displacement at 4.0L. The compression ratio can be altered by the different heads as well.
If you want to bolt up the new 205hp you will need to see if it bolts up to the standard 4 speed auto trans. That engine was designed to mate with the new 5 speed automatic used in late model explorers.

Hope this info helps

You can still get the 4.0 pushrod engine from Ford, it is still the standard engine. The 4.0 SOHC is the 205hp version. It should bolt up, but you will probably need a new computer and wiring harness. The SOHC engines came after the release of the EEC V, rather than the EEC IV that came factory on your truck. I don't personally know of anywhere that modifies the EEC IV to mate with the SOHC, but I suppose it is always possible.
