I agree, I would need to know the motor is good. I disagree, however, that salvage and junk yards are hit or miss. A strong majority near me offer very good warranties. You can't always tell overall wear on an engine, but with modern gas engines running 300k miles easy, I wouldn't even worry about it. You can tell pretty easy if a motor is bad when looking it over. I would pull the oil pan an inspect the bottom end good. Its a good idea to replace the oil pan gasket anyway. I would also compression test the motor. If the oil was full and looked good when I got it, no obvious signs in the bottom end, and it had good compression, I would not hesitate to put it in a vehicle.
