Engine shakes when the A/C is on.

When idling, the engine has some serious vibration & noise when I turn the AC on. Also, AC on or not, the engine has been making some sputtering sound.. engine doesn't miss or anything, there's just a constant sputtering coming from under the hood.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Heres a few things you might want to look into...
Cleaning the IAC (Idle air control unit)
Also clean the throttle body, that will help as well.
Heres a vid to give you an idea.


Clean MAF (Mass Airflow sensor)
PCV valve replacement (get a motorcraft one)

When was the last time the plugs and wires were changed and how many miles on the vehicle?
Might want to look into a coolant temp sensor too.

Wow man, thanks for the advice...

I've only owned the truck for 2 months, so I'm not sure when the plugs were changed last. The truck currently has 118,000 miles on it. I'll attempt to check / change the parts you listed....never tried all that before though.

No prob. Post back and let us know how it goes. You can also hit it with some seafoam. Heres a vid on that. Made my ranger and explorer run MUCH better.

I know on one of my other cars. There is a separate idle control to increase the idle to compensate for the drag created when the compressor kicks on. I'm not sure if Ford has the same design, but that is a possibility as well. I can't remember what it was called on my 240sx, but I'm sure someone on here might know.
