engine still running after turning ignition off and pulling jey out???

Hey everybody I got a funny thing going on with my 1998 ford explorer xlt. Well I've been having this problem for about a month now and it happens randomly. Well when turn off my ignition and take my key out sometimes my truck is still running somehow I even try turning it on n off to see if the engine will shyt off but it wont. The only that shuts the enging off when this happens is if I turn my light on and off? ?? Well I don't know what it is hope somebody could help.

a friend of mines ranger used to do the same thing. once we were driving and his cey chain got caught on his pants and the keys came out of the ignition. The truck was still running and operated fine. kinda crazy. Cant offer much help but when it happened he had to just jiggle the keys in the ignition and rock the steering wheel at the same time. Sorry its not much help. good luck.

Is the key all the way off? I remember on old fords the lock cylinder would fail and allow the key to be removed with out the lock cylinder in the off position. Another possibility is the ignition switch itself.

This happened on my mom's aviator... what a PITA.

Yeah the key is all the way off. The only way to turn it off when this happens is turning my lights on and off

It's the headlight switch, mine did the same thing. There's alot of crap running through that switch(I don't know why). replace your switch and your troubles will be over.
