k, so, friend gave me a '91 explorer (4.0, v6, auto) with a blown engine. i found some decent, low mileage engines to drop in, but can't seem to find a good manual that details engine removal/installation.

my questions: where do i find a good writeup on just a basic swap (4.0 to 4.0)? where can i find the fsm to download/buy? anything i need to watch out for or tips for the swap?

I believe my old manual which was a haynes i think gave a decent over view of how to remove the engine. The install process is nearly identical to the removal.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have. I did this swap a month ago and its fairly straightforward. If you can tie your shoes, you can swap an engine.

Disconnect everything, pull engine, put new engine in engine bay, reconnect everything.

I put a 94 engine in a 92 X, so I had to swap the upper intake and exhaust manifold on the driver's side since the 92 (and your 91), dont have an EGR subsystem. I believe you can use any engine up to and including a 99 4.0 ohv, but you will need to use your old exhaust and intake manifolds. 93 + also had camshaft sensors where the oil plug for the oil pump gear is on the rear of the engine. Just leave the sensor there unplugged--it wont hurt anything if you are using a 93+ engine.

should i remove the entire front clip or leave it? which is easier?
 






If by front clip you mean the bumper and grill, then leave all that there. The only parts of the body you will want to remove are the hood and front tires
 






tires? why do you need to remove the tires? guess i should get the manual...
 






by removing the front tires, you can lower the front end down on blocks, making the engine bay much more accessible.

jeez, if youre gonna spend the time to swap the engine, might as well shell out $15 for a haynes manual :rolleyes: it will come in handy for a lot of other things. i know i use mine so much its binding is basically gone. the haynes manual is the bible to true explorer enthusiasts.
 






lol...it isn't a matter of money, but rather a matter of convenience. i find having books digital easier to search :}
 






yea, but its also easier to just toss out a greasy book(my haynes is gettin to that point) its a PITA to clean grease off of a keybaord and mouse.
 






I am about to swap motors in my X (read: already have OLD motor out, and new motor loaded up, on my cherry picker.

I have an early `92 X ('A' in the seq. #), and the donor motor is from a 1993, XLT, AT.


I read about the upper intake swap, and drivers side exhaust manifold swap. I did those things, with new gaskets and all.....

I have a couple questions still.

Why did I have to do that. Side by side they look IDENTICLE. They do have different casting numbers, but but only 1 number/letter off.

I also had to swap the entire engine wiring harness too. The donor motor was attached to an AT, and it had 2 O2 sensor plugs....I have a `92 with a MT, and 1 O2 sensor. I found it MUCH easier to swap the whole engine harness than it would have been to cut/splice wires on a perfectly good harness.

So again, here are my questions:
1) Why EXACTLY did I have to swap the upper intake & DS Exhaust manifold?
2) Was is WISE of me to swap the whole harness over? or did I do more work than necessary?
