When i am driving and i put on the gas hard, the RPM's go up but i dont go any faster, its seems to take a second to realize what i am doing i guess? Is this normal

I dunno what you were used to driving before, but now you have a two ton+ vehicle with an awful lot of mass and inertia to overcome. I ain't gonna snap your neck when it kicks into passing gear. The RPMs raising without a gear change would be normal for the automatic torque converter while the power works on pulling all that weight faster. If you've got a manual trans then the only way that can happen is if your clutch is slipping and is about ready to replace.
If you just purchased the Explorer and are used to driving much lighter vehicles, I have a feeling that this is simply all it is. I know I sure noticed the difference when I initially started driving mine, and I have the SOHC engine.
