engine troubles

hello I am experiencing ticking noises from engine ...fluid levels are fine ...I have a 2002 explorer 4x4 with 200,000 miles that has had the usual problems associated with this model but overall has been a good vehicle...today it started making noises and was rough at times....got it to our shop at work ...checked fluid levels ...disconnected battery cables reconnected them 20 minutes later...still having noises and rough idle...we bought vehicle used and have never done any engine work on it ...looking for any ideas on what maybe happened thanks...

Which engine? v6 or v8

Sometimes the valve springs break and cause ticking noise and rough running.
