This has been an issue since I bought the Explorer a few months ago but now with the temps outside dropping I need to get it fixed.
So far I have replaced the thermostat and put the fan shroud on (it was off when I bought it) The temp gauge stays near the bottom when driving but goes up to about the middle of the gauge when sitting still. My Explorer also does not have the air dam at the bottom of the front bumper. (also not on when I bought it) I am thinking it might be getting too much air to the rad because of the airdam thing not being there, if fixing that does not work I am going to replace the heater core. Any suggestions?
