Error code P0430 - Cat efficency

Desc: Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 2)

Is this most likely a bad cat?
Could I punch the cat out?
If I do punch the cat out, will I get too much flow, thereby having the computer call up some different error code for having too much flow?

I want my check engine light to shut off.

Has anyone else replaced their cats?

First off, By punching the cat, do you mean getting rid of it? If thats what you're saying, then thats a Its there to stop polution and therefore should be left on. Since it was from bank two(your other post) then its probably an O2 sensor on bank two. Good Luck!

I mean just knock the guts out of it and replace the outer shell.

more than likly the cat is bad and needs replaced and thats the ONLY way your going to shut off the check engine light besides pulling the bulb, but you will just fail emissions anyway.

It is probably the cat, but you need to find out what caused the cat to fail in the first place. The diagnostic routine says to check wiring to the O2 sensors, leaks or restriction in the exhaust, and fuel pressure. If all those check out ok, then they say to replace the cat.

Thats no excues to gut or remove a cat, its illegal and more important, YOU and your loved ones have to breath the air.

Neither do we. but its a health hazard not to have one. Leave it there. If its the problem, replace, not remove.

It may also help to know what sets that code. The downstream O2 sensor is identical to the upstream one. The upstream one will vary back and forth over a certain voltage - the "crossover" voltage - in response to varying A/F mixtures. Post cat, there should be no change, and the voltage output remiins more or less constant. During each "drive cyle" the computer will run the A/F mixture up and down and watch specifically for any change in the post CAT 02 sensor voltage. If it sees a change, it assumes the CAT is not doing its job and your code is set and light comes on. Definitely get it fixed, but unless it is a "driveability" problem, don't panic.
