I'm working on one right now using one of my old MTX 12s in a bandpass enclosure with a full lenght plexiglass front panel and blacklight interior. The outside will be covered with a blackened-Ash veneer. The whole unit doubles as an end table for my couch.

I was just curious if anybody else as done something like this? Pics would be nice if you got them...

Just let us know how it turns out. I may do the same, $400 for a 10" sub woofer from the store is a little steep.

I've never built a dedicated sub enclosure but I did have my subs (in truck boxes) hooked up to my stereo for a while. They operate at a different impedence than your stereo does and you need to account for that or your system will be very heavy on the low end. I believe home audio equipment operates at 8ohms as opposed to 4ohms in the car.

if i could remember how to do it or what it was called someone from sounddomain pointed me to a website once that showed how to build a custom home theatre enclosure for monster bass and sound quality, using just a little MDF and one of those round concrete tubes....looked good after they painted it and i bet it sounded awesome

WOW, I really didn't expect this quick of a response.

Black Magic - I'll try and remember that, LOL!!

Reichhartkg - I was wondering if any body was going to catch that. My MTX sub is 8ohms, and I'll be running it off an external amp.

Robb - I'm considering using one of these:

click the pic for more details about the amp.

Thanks for the link Bigtig. I have been looking all over for an AC amp to drive a passive sub.

I guess by the time I consider buying

$100-$150 sub
$150 amp
$100 in materials (wood, terminals and ect..)

$400 don't sound too bad, plus it would look much cleaner.

HSU has (or at least used to) a $250,000 subwoofer setup that had 12 15" drivers and required it's own room. Oh, and it ran on about 12,000 watts rms, and 36,000 watts peak.

Lonestar - It really depends on what you want. If you want a boring little cube subwoofer then go buy one. Sure it will sound fine, but IMO they're all ugly and boring where as for about the same price possibly a little more mine will sound just as good, but will be total custom, and look 100% better than a boring little cube box, but like I said it all depends on what you want.

Estimated cost of my project to date:
MTX sub.............$100
Amp...................$130
Wood.................$10
Paint..................$50
Wood Stain.........$20
Hardware............$20
1/2 Plexiglass......$70
Ash veneer.........$70
Total.................$470

Here is picture of the box I'm currently building. I still need to get the veneer, plexiglass, blacklight paint, and the amp. You get the idea though

Nice

Dude it is looking good. I'll hafta come over and check it out later.

NO ports?

It looks like you are trying to showcase your MTX, like in car audio, where are your pheonix gold terminals? and its F-ing massive.

"boring little cube"
I just want it to look profeesional, clean and not take up so much room.

Good luck and hope it sounds good. Looks like an apt, try not to piss off your neighbors. LOL

It's actually slot ported, you can see the port in the first picture (black rectangle next to the couch).

Your right, it is pretty F*ing big, but like I said it doubles as an end table. I could have build it WAY smaller, but I choose this design specifical for its size and tuning range.

It is an APT, by neighbors are going to love me!! ROFL

I could build what your looking for around $50 in materials and what Pheonix Gold terminals are you talking about?

Just joking about the pheonix golds. Thats what all the ricers use on their car systems. I thought with all the plexiglass and everything, why not.

Your a funny man
