I have seen a couple of posts referring to different generation Explorers (as in C5 Corvettes), but am not familiart with the breakdowns, please enlighten me. I have owned a 94, 97, and 02, were they three different generations?

What generaton is your X?

Is this where the term Gen X comes from?;)

All three of them explorers were different generations.I am not sure on all of them but mine is from the first generation 91 to 94:D

I think it goes like this. as for the Gen x I have no idea.
91-94- Gen 1
95-99 Gen 2
00-02 Gen 3

91-94 1st gen
95-01 2nd gen
02-current 3rd gen

that's fer 4 doors... as the sports changed in '01 i believe, to the 3rd gen

That's FUNNY!

I think the only gray area is what to called 02,03 Sports. They got the body ubgrades (right?) although their suspension didn't.

Besides the change from the front twin I-beam suspension to the A-arm style are there any other major differences between the 1st gen Sport's and the 2rd and 3rd?

Okay, one more stupid question (for now). I get the difference between the 02 and previous ones, but what are the key differences between the 91-94 and 95-01 models?

Again, thanks for enlightening me

Differences between 1st gen and 2nd gen:

Body styling

Front suspension layout (twin traction beam vs SLA -short arm long arm aka A-arm type)

Dash board design (gauges, radios, heating system (e.g. the infamous blend door problem on 2nd gen)

3rd gen adds IRS (independent rear suspension)

Other less obvious changes:

95 still use EEC-IV engine control, but 96 up to 02 use EEC-V to comply with OBD-II standards. I think that 02 now calls it PTEC (Powertrain Electronic Control) which uses a 32bit processor http://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2002_explorer_2.html

95,96 uses 4R55E ipo A4LD, 97 up to 02 uses 5R55E for 4.0L engines. 96 up uses 4R70W for 5.0L engine. These transmissions use electronic controls for shift functions and to control line pressure, so they are tied into the Powertrain control system. The 02 uses the 5R55W5 trans which has no dipstick.

95 and up use the Control Trac transfer case. 95 and 96 have 2wd, 4wd Auto, 4wd Low. 97 and up have 4wd Auto, 4wd High, 4wd Low

And lots of other little details ;)

I kinda like the Twin Traction I-beam suspension, why did they dump it on all their trucks? It seemed to be a unique design.

I feel like my 94 is good value, basically the same truck without the fancy stuff... and I didn't have to pay 25 to 30 grand! :-)

i assume Ford dumped the "twin tractor beam" suspension for the same reason everyone else went to IFS... because demand dictated that the vehicle ride and handle like a car. thats one of the reasons why the solid front axle is all but gone now.:(

Yes, I believe the suspension was in fact designed by John Deere. ;)
