Ex is back from garage - desperate to drive it, but I cannot - help please

The reason I ask this is because I appear to have more of a problem if parking on a slope and putting it in park without using the actual handbrake. Is there possibly too much pressure on the pawl to release it, .

mines the same it only seems to do it when im parked facing down my drive or as you say when i park without using my handbrake........

When I think back to my white xlt, I went fishing and parked on a boat slip way- if thats what its called! I was facing forward and had a hell of a job getting it out of park.. I believe it was the fact that park locks up the wheels........
Try this - put it in neutral whilst covering the foot brake to hold the car, then apply handbrake and then put into park......Thinking once the car is stopped and held on a slope the wheel lock when in park will engage easier and disengage better.....Worth a try as an experiment!

I dont have a slope to park on so cant try this.

Living in Cornwall it is difficult to find somewhere without a slope - not the flattest county!! It is the slope that is causing the problem. Trouble is the handbrake on the Ex is crap.
I also have a big American Ford V8 Econoline - I always leave this with the gearshift in 'park', like I have been doing on the Ex. However, I never have any problems getting out of 'park' at all with any degree of slope, up or down. I never use the 'handbrake' on this - it does not actually have a handbrake as we know it, just a giant pedal under the dash which you operate with your foot and a smaller one next to it to release it. First time I drove in the states, I was told that Americans never use this parking brake, except in a dire emergency, but always leave the vehicle in 'park'. Interested to know if anybody else like Velocity4x4 and me, has this problem on a slope.

yea i can admit having the same problem on my driveway but its not very difficult to pull out tho, as bighvm said handbrake then park, thats wot i do to save the hassle for next time. i guess you can consider the parts inside the gearbox to a drum, wots easier to repair or replace. it only takes 4 clicks and my handbrake is tight on.

Think I will look upon the problem as one of those things in life that happens, and go and sort my handbrake out. By turning sideways across the driveway I can cut the slope right down - just have to change a few old habits.
