2002 Explorer XLT
So this week I'm "stuck" ( ;) ) driving my wifes '03 XLT as my Sport decided to cough up both its steering and brakes. When it rains it pours. I'm waiting to hear from the shop what is wrong with her. Hopefully nothing too serious. I haven't even unpacked the wheels I bought from Donner yet!!!!

Yeah, poor me!! ;) I love her Ex. Leather, moonroof, adjustable pedals etc... very nice truck. But I do miss my Sport. I've spent a lot of time working on it and I have many more plans for it. Hopefully I hear good news this week.

BTW trj, how you liking the Jeep?

I like it a lot, especially the manual trans, it's a lot of fun to drive, and no top, no doors, all that fun jeep stuff. Plus, it goes places my explorer can't. Crossing steep ditches (waaayyy better approach angles), slipping between trees. here's what i posted on jeepforum:

i still have a ton more work to do. i'm going to bedline the interior and swap in a rear 8.8. i also want to do one or more lockers, not quite sure on what i want yet. probably just some aussies because the 8.8 is strong and can take it. also new bumpers, i really want a tire carrier, some off road lights. i bought the thing for a grand so i can pretty much do whatever with it.

Wow... that Peej is in great shape. I had an 89 Laredo YJ. It was a P.O.S. After rebuilding the carb twice, then replacing it I gave up and swapped in a low mile EFI 4.0. Had 31" BFG M/T's on it. Then the body work got to be too much and I got rid of it. I'd had enough. Yours is in WAY better condition than mine was. I do miss the open air/ no doors driving.

I must say though, I do prefer the Explorer. And I love what you've done with yours. I'm still considering that front Aussie. Just concerned about trying to drive it on snowy streets in 4x4.

I definitely would not consider the handling "good" in the snow in 4x4 with a locked front axle. It's bearable, and it gets you through it, but maybe not going exactly the way you wanted to. Steering is affected a significant amount. Of course that's all from my limited experience in the snow in the explorer's current form, both locked axles, 2 storms that gave us 6-10" of snow each time.

I've got a Motorcraft (ford) MC2100 carb on the jeep and so far it's been great after some extensive tuning. I'm actually starting to think i like the jeep more than the ex, but maybe it's just because i haven't had it that long. we'll see i guess.

Well I got the news on my Sport today. My truck is toast. Needs a new tranny, new steering rack, new steering lines, new brakes all around and new brake lines. It pisses me off that a shop had to confirm what I already knew. I guess I was hoping he would tell me it wasn't that bad and could be fixed reasonably cheap.

So, now I'm looking for a 2000-2001 XLT, Limited or EB. Gotta have a new Ex!!!

Most everything that's wrong with it sounds like it could be remedied with a new transfer case, transmission, and SAS.

For real though that sucks. What don't you like about 98 and 99 explorers?

Nothing wrong with 98-99, just likely to get a lower mileage truck going newer. I may end up with a 98 or 99.

Gotcha. my 99 had around 109k on it when i bought it october 06 for 4500.

remember to pull your locker out and if you regeared, the gears

I guess if you can't lift it, make everyone around it go deaf.

Coil spacers make it go up! :D And my 32's should slide right on.

And I don't think a Flowmaster would be that loud.......hope not anyway. I don't want it to obnoxious, just a little growly.

no problem ,
with the prices in that area going down like they are , i am sure you will find a good one, ,

I bought it!

I went back today and bought the EB I drove yesterday. Its white with two tone tan leather interior. It also has the 4.6 under the hood. I'll post pics when I pick it up later this week.
