Excessive Fuel

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer that recently the service engine soon light came on and is using and excessive amount of fuel. When I get gas it has trouble starting but does start acts like it wants to die for about 30 seconds then is fine until I get gas again. It used a quarter of a tank of gas to go less than 50 miles
