Hey guys.....I have been wanting to do something with my exhaust, but generation 2's are tight. I want dual exhaust but it seems almost impossible.

I see just a few options:

1. remove the spare tire and place it in the bed (fab up a mount) to make room.

2. put a single cat back exhaust on and settle.

3. thinking about running the pipes in front of the rear tire (like the Lightning).

I have not seen/heard of anyone running the exhaust in front of the rear tire. The lightning exits on the passanger side, but our gas tanks are on that side. I don't know if it will be too loud exiting on the drivers side.

Has anyone on the forum attempted to run the pipes in front of the rear tire? If so how do you like it? any pics?

I have a 2005 Mustang GT with GTA cat back....I know it will not sound like the Stang, but I do want to hear the 4.6 make a little noise.

Thanks....

There is enough room on the left side to run dual exhaust and offset the mufflers. Although the mufflers will be fairly small and not reduce the sound a whole lot. You could bring it back up and over the trans crossmember then cross over to the left from the right under the driveline. You could then cross back over under the diff. in the rear then back over the rear end assembly. Sounds like a lot of mess and time just for dual exhaust. I fabricated 2 1/2" exhaust right out of the cats into a Magnaflow "Y" to a single 3" into a Magnaflow muffler. The exhaust then goes over the rear axle assembly and exits under the left rear corner tucked up tight. I even have a small relief in the bumper cover for the tip. A 3" Magnaflow single piece tip. The sound is noticeable and clean. You can drive down the road and easily talk. But it really roars when on it. It sounds *****'n with the hyperactive idle at cold startup and the cams.

I have a 40 series Flowmaster on mine. Single in single out Y pipe. Personally I love the sound but I'm young and can see the constant groaning of muffler getting annoying. I did run the pipes behind the spare. I didn't do it myself because I don't have the equipment. The pipes had to be custom bent and they had to cut off a little bit of the plastic piece right behind the tire for it to fit. I'm in college though and unfortunately I had to leave the truck at home :( so I can't get any pictures of the under body but I can post a picture of the rear of the truck as soon as I figure out how

I have a single Gibson cat-back, I like it and it went in pretty easy. Duals out has been done on Gen 2's but you will need a muffler tech who is very good and very patient. Best way is with a single-in dual-out muffler. Snaking a right-side pipe around the driveshaft, fuel tank, and IRS is difficult but not impossible.
Not worth the effort and expense in my opinion, but that's me.

So.....it sounds like I will have to stick with a little more aggressive single exhaust set up. I have an exhaust guy here that is good and not too expensive. I may get with him and see what he can do.

I do have another question.....any problems removing the resonator or is that the norm? If I can get a 3" set up it flows as much as dual 2.25". I just want the 4.6 to have a little more rumble. The truck runs good, but it could run better.

Thanks for the responses and keep the ideas coming.

Removing the resonator is normal procedure. I would just go with 2.5" pipe, our engines aren't that big. Too big a pipe and you lose the extraction effect, i.e. the exhaust velocity, and actually hurt performance and mpg.

How about 2.5" in and 3" out.....that should not hurt. My Mustang has 3" from the H pipe back. What do you think?

Should be okay. Mine has a 3" tip but the whole system is 2.5".

You are probably right.....All the exhaust I have looked at are 2.5". I have not decided if I am going to buy pre-fab or have one custom fabricated. I will work on it later this year....I am working on my exhaust on my 2006 Yamaha Rhino 660 right now. I am changing out the entire exhaust on it later this month. Thanks for the advice.....

how are you liking that gibson setup? i was thinking of getting that gibson catback setup for about 350. you have any audio clips of it?

Now that I think about it, my 2.5" is pretty tight around the rear suspension. I don't know that a 3" would fit.

I'll try to get around to it.

I have not looked for the Gibson set up on Youtube, but there are a good bit of vids on there for Sport Trac exhaust. I listen to several with Magnaflow and Flowmaster. Do a search for the Gibson....there is probably some there as well.

I used the Gibson SS on my 4.6 STA. It's 3" pipe all the way back. Being as they only had a side exit for regular ST's and not a rear exit for the STA, I had a muffler shop adapt the stock rear exit to the Gibson set up. It is really tight where it goes over the rear axle with the 3" pipe. Somehow while on a northern trip 2 years ago going through the mountains the system apparantly slipped back and was rubbing the the tulip and almost wore through. It was only when the engine was really torqued over. Could't hear it or feel it when it was happening. Got home and the shop shortened the head pipe.
This was an early Gibson set up and they apparantly sent test pipes originally, the head pipe was too long and they had the wrong bend on the first over axle pipe and had to replace it. The Magnaflow for the 4.6 is 2 1/2 like the factory.
I don't have the capability to send a sound clip, but it isn't loud, no drone and very mellow. Not any where near as loud as my Mustangs with FRPP mufflers.

Gibson lists different exhausts for the V6 and V8. The V6 kit is 2.5" and the V8 kit is 3".

I am also interested in the Gibson for my 4.0L V6. anyone have pics of how it looks installed? The little pic I am getting online gives me no info on how the actual tailpipe will look on the truck.

It fits exactly where the OE exhaust runs, hangers lined up perfect, slam dunk to install. Bud of mine owns a transmission shop and I gave him a few bucks for one of his lifts and a little help. We had the old off and the new on in less than an hour. I only needed some shorter bolts for the cat flange. I did have to tinker with the tailpipe for a couple days until it didn't hit anything on the rear suspension. And you get a shiny 3" stainless tip. I ended up cutting about 3"-4" off the end of the tailpipe so it didn't show inside the tip.
You will probably spend more time removing the old system than installing the Gibson. You WILL have to cut the old exhaust in front of the rear axle, only way to get it out. Sawzall much faster than hacksaw.
I didn't drop big coin for the stainless system. I got the aluminized, washed it with Dawn, roughed it with a Scotchbrite, and painted it with silver hi-temp paint. Four years later in the Salt Belt and it still looks like new.

Thanks for that. Do you have any pics of the tip? I can't how it looks at all. Does it come out and turn a 90 degree as the pipe exits behind the tire or is it like a 45 degree bend? Would love to see a pic of the tip installed.

Also, how is the sound on the 4.0L? Is it annoying at highway speeds or just noticable when accelerating? Hoping it is relatively deep tone with no drone or anything.

If I get it I would get the Stainless version. I'm seeing it online for $350 shipped!

The tip is a polished stainless 3" baloney cut, comes out at a 45* angle. Sounds awesome at idle, when I'm driving, people hear me coming. It is louder under load, like when going up a hill or when the Trac is full of people. It drones inside the cab but it's not too bad and I got used to it although the wife is not a fan (meaning that it sounds just right). Makes a V6 sound as good as it ever will IMO. IF you're looking at $350 that's the aluminized system, the stainless is about $650.

Trac coming off the AutoTrain. They call out the door number so you know to come and get your vehicle. Best pic I have of the left side and tailpipe.

Here are the 2 systems I see for the Gibson exhaust for an 07+ Trac with a 4.0L V6. Looks like $356 for the stainless model and $281 for the aluminized steel version. Looks like a hell of a deal to me. Those are the correct systems right?

Well, it's not letting me put a link. Just go to "auto parts warehouse dot com" and put in the vehicle information for exhaust systems and the 2 Gibson exhausts come up. The first one is stainless and the 2nd is aluminized steel.
