I recently found out that I have a whole in my muffler. Shortly after this my engine (only when I start it up) will cause my RPM guage at about 700RPM to rise and fall but engine doesn't die. Is this due to my muffler leak? What will happen as a result of a muffler leak?

Another question to my reply about the rain causing me to loose power. After I replaced my spark plugs and wires this problem still occured. What kind of plugs and wires do you guys reccommend? Thanks

Moisture could also be messing with your coil pack, if it has a crack (sometimes even if it's smaller than you really can see).

Where exactly is the hole in the muffler? Do you mean the muffler itself or somewhere in the system?

If it's small enough you might want to try the dope stuff they sell at auto parts stores. This helped me in the past.

As far as your wet weather problem, go get some spray silicone & use it on the coil pack, plug wires, ar anything else you can think of that carries voltage. Might have a crack somewhere & that stuff could clog it.

the hole is in the muffler itself not the tailpipe. Whats the real name for that dope stuff? Where exactly is the coil pack? When it comes to cars I know very little. Thanks for the help
 






It's called muffler cement, but I don't believe a small hole in the muffler will cause the RPMS to fluctuate. Have you pulled the codes to see what they reveal? There may be a code stored even if the CEL is out. Most Autozones will pull them for free. Call ahead to confirm.
 






Coilpack, distributer, whatever you want to call it. It's where your spark plugs connect to. Should be a black 6-pack type of block on top of the motor. Just follow a spark plug wire from the plug to it.

Also, you may have a slight vacuum leak that would cause rpm's to jump. Easiest way to find vacuum lines (for me) is to start at the brake master cylinder booster (the round thing behind the master cylinder). There's a vacuum line on that. Trace it back to the engine & all vacuum lines should connect eventually. I have heard folks say they use starter fluid & spray the lines. When rpm's stabilize, the spot you sprayed is a leak.
