I just recently got a Flowmaster 40 series installed on my '02 Explorer Sport. It's been about 250 miles now that I've had it. I just had them swap the stock with the new Flowmaster.

It seems pretty broken in, but it's still not as loud as I expected I guess. I was wondering if the (what I assume) is a resonator behind the muffler on the 4.0 SOHC's. It's just a 1' tube that is about 4" in diameter maybe on the pipe itself.

Does this have any sound muffling to it? I never really knew what they did. And can I remove it without causing any problems?

Big difference in loudness with my Dynomax Superturbo. (Almost a stock sound with the resonator)
Also improved the tone to a deeper note, albeit a slight increase with interior drone, above 2000 RPM.

Yeah it is pretty stock. I can hear it roar when I start it and if I rev it in neutral but nothing more... Is there piping under the resonator or is it in place of the pipe?

No errors or codes will get thrown with it off?

On my ST, the resonator was replaced with a short straight pipe.
No codes thrown, usually happens when you play with the cats. GL

The OP is confused. There is nothing beyond the muffler but a heatshield near the tailpipe. The third cat (not a resonator) is in FRONT of the muffler and is way more than 4" around in diameter.

The heat sheild is that long? I've seen resonators in stores and they look like what's on my piping. It's not near anything that would need sheilding really either.

i got single in and dual out 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport and i love how it sounds but lately its making a rattling sound i think its my heat shields but i am not 100% sure.

but previous owners of my sport had the single in and dual out 70 series and i got rid of them and i love how my sport sounds with the 40 series. but i might get rid of the 40 series and possibly put the 10 series flowmasters.
