I want to install my own performance muffler bc there is no way I am paying the mechanic $100 bucks to put a muffler on. What are basic procedures? stock 01 st pipes are 2.25 right? could I cut the piping with basic metal saw? I am not comfortable using my dads sawzall. and can I clamp in the new piping and the muffler???

I paid my local muffler guy $35 to replace my muffler when I took him the Dynomax. It was worth it to me to not have to weld under my truck without a lift. I'd recommend shopping around. $100 is a complete ripoff.

2.25" is correct.

I've had clamped exhaust on my Cougar and much prefer having it welded once and forgetting about it. Clamped is fine for the most part but I did rip both mufflers off when taking it off my trailer. Just something to consider.
 






Yeah he wanted 250 for the muffler and install. thats not an option for me. If I am lucky and its clamped, then I will just clamp the new one in.
 






I paid $40 for the muffler and $35 for the install. Must have been one heck of a muffler and his welds must be art.

Yes you can cut it but it'll be easier with the sawzall or grinder with cutoff wheel. All of the aftermarket mufflers are alot smaller then the factory muffler so you'll probably need to get a piece of pipe to take up the length. You'll need atleast two 2.25" clamps, a muffler of your choice and a piece of 2.25" i.d. pipe (probably a 10-18" piece should be more then enough to be on the safe side. if the shop will cut out the old muffler, weld in the new one with any extra piece of pipe needed it's worth $40-60, especially if it's welded it right. I had a shop bend up dual 2.5" tailpipes, weld in a new muffler, hangers, etc. for $160. I spent $18 for two 8ft. sticks of 2.5" pipes and $30 at the swap meet for a knock off stainless steel MagnaFlow single2.5" in/ dual 2.5" out. You can check it out this Saturday whne I come up to Detroit.
 






SWEET! :D was hopin you'd come up. I was also hoping this wasnt going to be that involved that I couldn't do it myself grrr.....oh well! I will take it to my new place and see what they can do for me.
 






It's not too hard to swap out the muffler yourself but it can be a PITA depending on what muffler and the amount of rust, etc...

I've redone my exhaust three times myself but diddn't have a pipe bender to do my tailpipes myself so i went to a local speed/ drag race garage I've b.s.'d with over the years.

It's totally worth it to weld in the exhuast as opposed to clmping it on. JMHO.
 












I would get the pipe conversion thingys just in case. it says universal fit. usually means its a pain in the ass to make it work. lol. 2.25 inlet and outlet is the best way to do it.
 






So I ended up getting a thrush turbo muffler from advance auto parts. I doesn't sound ricey (which was what I wanted) and it barks when i lay on the pedal. idle it isnt too loud but more than stock. uhhmm....thats pretty much it. ill try to get a video laterrr
 












its welded in. how do i take the resonator off? I like the sound but sometimes what I find weird is the fact that the engine noise is totally separate from the muffler noise lol. Meaning, I hear one noise up front and one in the back. It's an interesting concept.
 






The resonator is welded in. It's function is to reduce drone and is behind the muffler.
I found no increase in cab noise. Replaced it with a short straight pipe, reused the
DORKY tail spout exiting the right side, added a 2.5" Vibrant tip, and ran straight back.

i have a flowmaster 40 with a dual turn downs its dual in dual out
 






I will eventually do it this spring when its warmer. lol. I should have got the dual out but I can always change it. does the tip help with acoustics at all?? I never got the point with them...

Most tips are just for looks, there are some tips that a ported a special way or have little whistlers in them to change the sound.

My dad just got a tip for his Chevy and it looks a lot nicer than the stock tip.
 






I might just make my own. I have a day off tomorrow and head to a yard to get some metal to work with. I bet I can get some metal for cheap and then just cut and bend to my liking. I am trying to think of ways to use knowledge of how sound waves can be manipulated to create different sounds, but i cant find a design that would help me...lol this is bothering me.

Okay this is probably thought of but I wanted to see if its an interesting idea. so sound can be amplified by reverberations. So...find different diameters of piping (steel, stainless, etc....). bend the tubes at one end to create cones. Then, drill holes in each differently sized pipe offsetting the holes. this would cause different vibrations thus causing a deeper sound....no??

again, sorry for the horrible drawing, but youll get the idea
