Exhaust smell in 96 explorer while towing

I have noticed that when we pull our utility trailer we gat an exhaust smell inside our 96 x 4 door with 4.0L. Our trailer has 23" high sideboards (not solid, has 1.5" between board) built from 2x4's & 2x6's. Did or does anyone else have this problem? If so, what did you do to cure / prevent this?

Check for things like exhuast leaks. And does the truck burn any oil?

Probably your rear cargo door / window rubber gasket is "weak" / worn.... usually on the bottom ledge allowing a small amount of air inside. Perhaps with the trailer, the resulting air flow has enough "back pressure" to find its way in.
