hi there , i own a 98 xlt , 4.0 ohc , done the lift thing now i wanna make it sound grumpy , a big dirt munchn rig that has no sound to it just dont look right , its got 2 pipes into one big muffler then into a little cylinder muffer then out the tailpipe now , which im guessn is stock for all Xs? would just changing the muffler to better one like a flowmaster be enough to beef it up or should i go with larger diameter pipes aswell ? any suggestions welcome.

Most do a cat-back system. Lots of info on it if you search. Can be bought as a kit, or have your local muffler shop do it. Most are less then $200. I went with full 2.5 exhaust, catco cat and xcellerator muffler. Question, are cats required on vehicles in Australia?

hi sparky , my X has 2 cats 1 on each of the pipes that come out of the motor , i think its called a duel inlet single outlet type , so i can just replace the piping and muffler from the cat back? without having to replace the cat? and the answer to your question is yes , here in oz we pretty much have the same laws when it comes to emission control , the only way you can run a car without a cat here legally is down the drag strip. thanks for your help.

yes, cat-back will give you the sound you want, many are on the market. from mild to wild.

I've got a 97 eddie bauer, 4.0 SOHC. I woudl also like to beef it up, but im not sure what would sound best. does anyoen know of any links in which i could look at cat-back systems or mufflers alone? thanks much

is that an OHV or a SOCH????

BTW depending on sound you can go the Flowmaster route. The 40 series being loud and the 70 quiet. I have heard the 40 it is LOUD when i do mine i am going with a 50(some times there is to loud).

ooops srry bout that its a sohc , the pipes under there now look fairly big , i think its just the huge a$$ muffler thats on there that makes the motor so quiet . anyone know what the stock size pipes are on a 98 xlt 4dr 4.0ltr SOHC???????

I think it is 2.25 just buy a muffler and take it to a shop and then have them put it on for you. That will make it a bit louder, or you can have the complete system done for 300 ish.

hiya i found out the existing pipes upto the exhaust are already 2.25" , so im just getn a sports muffler (lukey) and replacing the pipes from the muffler back to the tailpipe with 2.5" , thanks for your help , the X will finally have the sound to match the look ,cheers .

summitracing.com has a nice selection, or your local muffler shop can help you select and 'weld' it on instead of aftermarket bolt on.

got it fitted today , joined the two pipes into one then into the lukey muffler then straight 2.5" pipe to the tail . it sounds f$$kn wicked!!!!!!! gave me a boner on the way home from the shop! . i love the sound of it , dont know why i didnt do it earlier and OMFG! it makes a huge difference to the fuel gauge! the fuel meter hasnt moved yet. only one problem now , i wana floor it everywere i go , i guess il be paying a few speeding fines in the near future .
