Exhaust ?

I want a catback exhaust with 2.5" pipes with a flowmaster 50. Well I am unsure of how they do this if I have a dual in single out muffler now. There are 2 cats right? It looks like 2 cats underneath.
Anyone with 98 sport have an exhaust? What did they do for yours? Would they replace both pipes in with 2.5" and then one single 2.5" out or do they leave the stock pipe in with only 2.5" out of muffler. If so that seems like a rip off if they only replace muffler and pipe out of it.
Also another place said something about Ying the pipes together and doing single in single out. Would this be a good idea?

You could get a Y pipe before the muffler or you could get the flowmaster 50 series SUV performance muffler dual in/single out. It has a 3" outlet which you can get reduced to 2.5" and both inlets are 2.5" Any good muffler shop will be able to adapt this muffler on to the stock pipes that come off the last 2 cats. I have that same muffler except mine is dual in/dual out with dual pipes. It sounds really good.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess getting the dual in single out muffler would be better than Ying the 2 together. Should I reduce it to 2.5" or get the 3"?

I would reduce it to 2.5". You will have more back pressure that way which will prevent you from losing too much torque.

whats the stock pipe size coming off the cat?

Depends on which CAT. I think the one connecting the two is 3" and the one into the muffler is 2.25 or less stock. I know that when I installed my Gibson it came with a coupler that goes from the pressure fitting on the CAT to the muffler. That is now a 2.5", and such the same aft of the muffler.

Well on my 98 SOHC there are 4 cats. 2 on each pipe and then those 2 pipes run into the muffler and come out as one (stock). I think the pipe size before the muffler is 2.5" and after the muffler is smaller but I think it gets even smaller after the resonator. That tail pipe doesnt look much larger than 2".

Unless ford acidentally installed the V8 exhaust on yours, you should only have two cats. The V8 is the only model that should have 4 cats. Two very small ones in line before they go into the muffler. The SOHCs are a bit bigger. One should be next to the transmission, the other should be under it.

I have the 2 near the tranny and 2 side by side right before the muffler. Maybe the did something different on the sports with a SOHC due to lack of room.
