Exploded sunroof

Hey all,
Maybe someone out there might have some useful info on this. I have a 94 Eddie Bauer that I purchased used, it has a power retractable sunroof that slides back as well as tilts upward. Two months ago the roof was hit by falling ice from a tv transmitter tower, and among all the damage it had, the sunroof was destroyed. It's still in the shop because no one seems to be able to figure out where to get a replacement. According to the shop, The Ford factory says there were never any power sunroofs installed in Explorers of any model back then. We ran a Carfax on it, but could not locate the original dealer. They think it is an aftermarket sunroof, and trying to find a replacement has been nothing short of a B***H. Has anyone had a power roof installed, or know about what Ford says that they didn't have one from the factory. The one that was in there looks like a factory job, and if it was aftermarket, whoever did it, was pretty damn good. If anyone has had one installed, or knows who does these please let me know. I don't want to be riding around too long with a piece of plexi installed until I find the right sunroof. Thanks!!! :frustrate

If it's power, try taking apart the area where the switch is. Maybe there's a company name printed on the other side. Otherwise I can't help.

There are only a hand full of manufacturers that make sun roofs for the explorer, because of the size and the fact that we have the water gutters in the roof, we are limited on sizes. I would bet that an aftermarket truck place would be able to replace it. Maybe not with the orginal company but one with the same size hole in the roof.

Not possitive about POWER, but the Sunroof WAS and option available on the 94 model year. I'll see if my parts Mgr. can locate the info for you and then I'll post it by Monday AM...

Yes, it was definitely an option. When I first got my Ex, I was looking through the owners manual and it had stated the option for a sunroof.

The roof is definately a power sliding roof, and I hope I locale one. But Ford did tell us the only option they had for a sunroof was a pop up one and not a power one. Maybe the guy we spoke to was mistaken? But please post any findings you mat have, maybe one of them will be useful.

I believe '91-'94 Explorers have the pop-up sunroof, but not powered at any way. By what you told us, I'm sure you have an aftermarket. Just find a good reputable aftermarket sunroof retailer and let them fix it.

I had a power sunroof in my old '93. It was a pop-up and it slid. It had a switch for ASC (automatic sliding control), that would shut automatically when the vehicle was shut off. It came stock with the vehicle.

I know your in Mass...but I had my pop up installed by a place here in VA, which also installs aftermarket power sunroofs that fit my explorer. I opted for the cheaper.

It was called lee's custom trim, located in northern VA. (703) 569-1788 I can't remember the name brand of the sunroof, but I will look it up tonight in my paperwork and post if I find it. If I can't...you can call them to find out what manufacturer they use for the Explorer applications.

1991-1994 Explorers all had pop up/ manually removable sunroofs that I know of. My dad owned 2 1991 Eddie Bauers, and 2 1994 Limiteds all factory loaded and they were all pop up/ manually removable roofs. Any 1991-1994 power sunroofs where either a dealer install or aftermarket

And you know this for sure? If so, that's cool. I had a dealer installed sunroof... cool.

I have a 94 XLT with a power sunroof. If it is an aftermarket unit it the best done install I have ever seen! I have seen many 94 or earlier X's in SoCal with the power sunroof.

i have been a ford parts manager for 15 yrs and there were no "factory power" sunroofs offered on 91-94 explorers. i will admit i have seen some darn good aftermarket installs that some of you have. i dont recall ford offering this as a dealer install either.

Thanks Partsman........You are right, we did find out it is a custom job. It really is a well done one too, and we found someone who says they can replace it. I hope so. If it is done as well I will try to post any info I get on them if anyone else may be interested in getting one.
