Second Gens V6 SOHC engines have a tendency to have timing chain problems. Ask about the engine - if the chains have been replaced or not. See the mileage - if its low, like around 100K miles/ 160k kilometers, its likely the chains have not failed yet. Have a look around this forum, theres loads upon loads of information.
I'm not saying the V6 SOHC is a bad engine, truthfully it is a decent engine but flawed in design. There are more issues but they are normal and go for pretty much any vehicle.
My 99 Explorer is in great running order with 156k+ miles (aside from my current timing chain failure) Tranfer case, tranny, PCM pretty much everything still works great. Honestly a really dependable vehicle.
Choose a 98, 99 or 2000 V6 model. The V8 is more durable if you decide to get one instead of a V6. It's better for towing, and gas mileage is pretty similar to the V6.
