Hi

I'm new here and seriously thinking about importing a used RHD 1995-2000 5 door Explorer from Japan.

Are there some things I should know before choosing a unit?

Hi and welcome to Explorer Forum!

Second Gens V6 SOHC engines have a tendency to have timing chain problems. Ask about the engine - if the chains have been replaced or not. See the mileage - if its low, like around 100K miles/ 160k kilometers, its likely the chains have not failed yet. Have a look around this forum, theres loads upon loads of information.

I'm not saying the V6 SOHC is a bad engine, truthfully it is a decent engine but flawed in design. There are more issues but they are normal and go for pretty much any vehicle.

My 99 Explorer is in great running order with 156k+ miles (aside from my current timing chain failure) Tranfer case, tranny, PCM pretty much everything still works great. Honestly a really dependable vehicle.

Another thing I would like to know is how does one identify which 4.0 engine they have, whether OHV or OHC - does the chassis number tell this?

The VIN does I believe. The 8th digit is what engine it is. X is OHV and E is SOHC. VIN Decoding Page

Hi, me again, I've found a '99 Explorer with 64000km on the clock, only thing is the ABS light is staying on.

The rest of the vehicle looks good except for that ABS light - should I take a chance and buy it and fix it, or is it going to cost a fortune...

That's a little difficult to do...the vehicle's in Japan, and I'm in the Caribbean.

What I mean is, should I take a chance and buy??

Can anyone tell me where I can find a free download of an Explorer service/repair manual??
