I changed my battery on my 1996 explorer xlt and went to get truck inspected. the inspection tech said I need to drive truck 100-200 miles to get all engine/emission info to show up before he can finish inspecting the vehicle.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the amount of miles he is suggesting I drive the truck before he re-inspects the vehicle? 100-200 miles seems excessive to me.

Thanks for your input.

OBDII Drive Cycle: engine must be warmed up before starting cycle.

PROCEDURE
In the event that a particular drive mode of the OBD II Drive Cycle is interrupted before completion, repeat this drive mode. Once started, the engine must not be turned off at any time during the OBD II Drive Cycle. The summary chart shows a graphic representation of an OBD II Drive Cycle.
1. Start the engine. Drive the vehicle or idle in neutral for 4 minutes. Probe requires a drive or idle in neutral for 9 minutes.
2. Idle the vehicle in drive (neutral for M/T) for 40 seconds.
3. Accelerate the vehicle to 45 MPH (M/T up shift from 1st to 5th gear but hold in 2nd gear for at least 5 seconds) at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle for 10 seconds. When driving an Escort/Tracer or a Probe, accelerate to 35 MPH (M/T up shift to 3rd gear) at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle for 10 seconds.
4. Drive the vehicle with a steady throttle at 45 MPH (M/T use 5th gear) for 30 seconds. When driving an Escort/Tracer or a Probe, hold a steady throttle at 35 MPH (M/T use 3rd gear) for 30 seconds.
5. Idle the vehicle in drive (neutral M/T) for 40 seconds. Probe requires this idle to be for at least 2 minutes
6. Continue to drive the vehicle in city traffic at speeds between 25 and 40 MPH (M/T primarily drive vehicle in 3rd and 4th gear when
possible) for 15 minutes. During the 15 minute drive the following modes must be achieved:
a. At least 5 stop and idle modes at 10 seconds each.
b. Accelerations from idles at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle position (Escort/Tracer use 1/2 to 3/4 throttle position).
c. Choose 3 different speeds to do 1.5 minute steady state throttle drives. However, on the Probe, the last steady state throttle drive should be between 25 and 40 MPH for 5 minutes.
7. Accelerate the vehicle up between 45 and 60MPH (M/T up shift to 5th gear). This should take approximately 8 seconds.
8. Drive vehicle and hold the throttle steady at the selected speed between 45 and 60MPH (M/T use 5th gear) for approximately 5 minutes.
9. Drive vehicle for 5 minutes at varying speeds between 45 and 60MPH (M/T use 5th gear).
10. Bring the vehicle back to idle. Idle in drive (neutral for M/T) for 40 seconds.

SPECIAL NOTES

The engine on all vehicle applications except Escort/Tracer must be warmed up to an operating temperature of at least 180°F (82°C) before proceeding with the OBD II Drive Cycle (check ECT PID). The OBD II Drive Cycle for the Escort/Tracer must be initiated on a cold start or at an ECT reading of less than 100°F (45°C) to assure completion of the Evaporative Thermistor Flow Test (part of the Comprehensive Component monitor) and the Catalyst monitor. This temperature can be verified with the ECT PID on the Scan Tool. Do not turn the engine off or restart anytime during the OBD II Drive Cycle to clear DTC P1000. If a key off does occur, start the process from the beginning.
a. For Probe a drive or idle in neutral for 9 minutes in Step 1 and an idle in drive (neutral for M/T) for 2 minutes in Step 5 is necessary to
satisfy conditions to initiate the Evaporative Emission Monitor.
b. For Escort/Tracer and Probe acceleration to no more than 35 MPH (M /T in 4th gear) and a steady throttle at that speed is required for HO2S Monitor completion.
c. The city drive 25 to 40 MPH (M/T in 3rd and 4th gear) must include the following driving modes:
- At least 5 stop and idle (A/T in drive and M/T in neutral) modes at 10 seconds each.
- Accelerations from idles at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle position (for Escort/Tracer use 1/2 to 3/4 throttle position).
- Choose 3 different speeds between 25 and 40 MPH (M/T in 3rd and 4th gear) to do a 15 minute steady state throttle drive.
- A steady state throttle between 25 and 40 MPH near the end of the 15 minute drive is required on the Probe to meet conditions to run the steady state portion of the Catalyst Monitor.
d. The Evaporative Emission Monitor may not initiate in ambient temperatures below 400°F and above 110°F. Both the Evaporative Emission Monitor and Misfire Detection Monitor do not have to initiate or complete in order to clear the DTC P1000.
e. The EGR Monitor on the Probe extends through the completion of the steady throttle drive at 50 to 60 MPH for 5 seconds.

it should take just under 32 min to complete.

good luck...i don't know any techs that have successfully completed a drive cycle without being on a dyno.
