I've been shopping around some Explorers and am wondering about the different engine options. I drove a 16 XLT that I believe had a 3.5 Liter engine (not sure if it was the TIVC or 24 valve). It seemed really sluggish! I then drove a 16 Sport which was incredible with alot of get up! Later I drove a 15 V6 Limited that seemed to have more get up that the XLT that I drove.

Anyhow...I'm trying to find more information on the two V6 Engines options that I've seen listed. I see the TIVC engine and a 24 Valve one offered when I search Explorers for sale but on Ford's site I don't see two different V6 engines listed.

I'm nervous about buying a Turbo engine and the longevity of it.

Any opinions on the differences if you know or have experienced driving them. Funny how many salesman have no idea. TY!

All the engines are the same, they both have TiVCT. The Sport has the Taurus SHO engine and drive train and has 365 hp compared to the standard engine at 290 hp which is the same TiVCT engine just without the turbos. The only main difference is the Ecoboost had direct injection and the standard 3.5 ltr has sequential fuel injection. The 3.5 ltr V6 in the XLT/Limited has not changed since the New explorer was introduced in 2011.

The Platinum also has the same Ecoboost engine as the Sport.

I'm pretty sure the new F150 is running the Ecoboost 3.5 too.

Ti-VCT 290 hp (216 kW) at 6500 rpm and 255 lb·ft (346 N·m) at 4000 rpm

This the engine you'll find in the XLT and Limited. TIVCT = Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing. It has plenty of poop when you need it. Having come from a '!3 Mustang GT/CS with the 5 liter version, I am not unhappy with this engine. It can get out of it's own way and hums down the road fine. It can also be tuned for more power, a option I, myself, may consider in the future. 55, 70, 80mph, it will cruise their all day long in as fast a time as you'll ever need. If you want 4.5 second 60 times, go with a 5.0 Mustang GT. If you want seating, space for your stuff and reasonable poop, you couldn't go wrong in any Explorer of your choice. :salute:
