i have a 2001. mine stopped wiping. the motor works and every so often the wiper will get up but just skim the rear window. what it is, i think, is that the arm has a cog in it that has just been completely ground down to almost nothing. i assume this is it, havent had a chance to put a new wiper arm on yet but. i looked closely at the cog on the arm and there are some areas not worn down which would explain how sometimes the wiper goes up and skims.

Thanks for the quick reply, my problem is the blade keeps getting caught between the rear window glass edge and the area that the wiper parks on.

You can pull the wiper arm off (Well at least on the 91-97's) and just put it back on a notch lower than it is currently...

you can't do that because the plastic stop on the blade keeps the blade from going lower

Thanks for the welcome this sight is wonderful. The problem is not the lenght of the blade its just that the wiper always is getting caught in that little space under the window and the body

the wiper parks on the body a few inches below the glass and when you engage the wiper it goes in to the area were the glass ends in that little channel

and gets stuck, if I go back there all I have to do as pull the blade out of the channel and works fine until the next time.

welcome

mine did that when i tried to bend it in to wipe better, so i bent it back and it has been good but doesnt wipe worth a ****.its a 99 also.
My mom has a 2000 and the rear wiper just makes noise but doesnt move. so im really not sure but ford screwed up on the rear wiper on explorers

Mine does the exact same thing. Anyone has a solution for this?

Ive found one, whatever length the front wipers just replace the back with that length, fixed my issue at least

Front=18"
Rear=12"

If you managed to get an 18" on there, it would get stuck, either on the handle, or the squirter, it would be going so far off the window....

EDIT: Nvm, I noticed you guys have the newer 2nd gens with the different hatch. Not sure what size that takes, but im pretty sure the fronts are still 18" and I highly doubt thats what the rear would be...I would guess a 14" at the most

The rear wiper on my 98 EB operates well, but the wiper blade comes off the window about half way thru the arc, well most of it does. Ive tried tweaking the arm to increase the pressure against the glass, but no luck. Id appreciate any thoughts.

My rear wiper was just cleaning 1/2 of the window. I bent the arm in slightly, and it cleared the problem up right away.

Is the 98 the newer style liftgate?

If so, that was a common problem, the wipers had bad springs, which didnt give it enough pressure to get the whole window, I believe they had a recall on it a while ago
