Explorer turns over but wont start

Past two day my explorer will run just fine until I go somewhere and get back in the car it will turn over just fine but wont start all the way. Then after waiting 20-40 mins it will crank right up. I noticed yesterday when it did it there was a strange smel. Also when i turned the knob for the headlights they would not turn on nor would my dashboard light up. When i turn the lights knob (the one located on the side that turns them on and off) to the brights it turned the digital read of the mileage off.

This maybe a seperate issue but in the months past there was an issue with the overhead lights turning on and the doors trying to lock and the door ajar light coming on and a beeping sound.it would do this repeatedly

Sounds to me like you are having a PATS issue (use search box at top for PATS) but that wouldn't explain the smell.

thanks but so far it looks like i just needed a major tune up and the lights thing was the all day light function going out. the smell seems to be that there is an oil leak from the gaskets

Is the fuel pump coming on? My 94 did the starting thing and I put a fuel pump on it only to find 2 weeks later it was just relay going bad.
