Yesterday I backed out of my parking space at work, moved the gear selector to OD, and didn't go forward... Gave it some more gas, still not moving. Finally, after I hit about 2500 RPMs, it shifted and I was on my way. It kept doing this the rest of the day! So I got home, checked the fluid, it's fine. Checked for vacuum leaks, there are none. Now it's at the shop where the transmission was rebuilt a mere 1,000 miles ago!!!! Luckily it's still covered under their 12,000 mile warranty, and hopefully they fix it for real this time so this does not happen again in another 1,000 miles...

My first rebuild lasted about 2 months. I got my second one with Cottman Transmissions and they've been really good to me. We did have some problems, but they weren't totally their fault and they fixed them quickly.

atleast you got 12,000 mile warranty i only get 8 good luck

I called the shop for a status update and they said that "something gave way inside". That's reassuring... I might have it back today, but definitely by tomorrow. Then I get to take it to a different shop for the driver's side clicking from the wheel and new ball joints. If I'm lucky I'll get it back before this time next week! :p

Another status update... The forward clutch (or clutches if there is more than one - I couldn't hear well) burnt out, and is/are being replaced. This is what I figured had happened, since Reverse still engaged quickly and worked fine. How could that happen in 1,000 miles? My mod-free (save the KKM), 126,000 mile Ex certainly is not a hot rod.

If a needle bearing fails it will mess up all the forward clutch packs, I know that.

It was either faulty parts (most likely) or they did something totally wrong.

economy tranny rebuilders tip #18 you can cut cost's in half by reuseing half the old clutch disc's just mix em up with new ones, half old and half new.
thats what they did with mine when they rebuilt it.
also could be forward drive sprage failure wich is more expensive then replaceing some worn clutches

isnt that the truth... half old half new... i went through 6 trannys in my camaro... different shops the last one held up the best, with juice and all just wouldnt shift into 3rd at WOT..... but each place voided my warranty shortly after i left... stating i raced it.... :( dont know how they followed me haha... i was going to fast for what they had but ohh well... when i have 2 replace the tranny in my exploder... i am doing it my self..... all new stuff and hopefully it will work lol....

Yeah, that was my plan too, I just didn't have enough free time to do it. But the next time the tranny goes, I am buying a new car. I said that the last time but didn't have enough cash saved up. Next time, I'll get it repaired, and she goes to the highest bidder!!

I've had mine rebuilt 3 times, one time was just like 2000 miles apart. But the third time I was fedddd up. So I made it a 5 speed :) and it has been perfectly fine since. Not too bad of a project either... its a mazda 5 speed out of a 94

Ugh... Got the Ex back yesterday. The tranny is working great right now, I think they did a better job with it this time than they did last time (can't feel it shift into reverse). However, today I removed my wheels to check my brakes and to my astonishment, my driver's side manual hub was FILLED with grease, and the outer bearing nut was not even finger tight! It's supposed to be at 150 ft/lbs!! This shop just replaced my rotor and wheel bearing on only the driver's side, so I know that they were at fault. Especially when I removed the passenger side wheel and found the hub to be grease free and the nut nice and tight.
