EX's power steering sucks

I dont know what it is but the power steering on my EX is horrible.......my old pump started leaking and whined really loud at when idling and take off but wasnt horrible when turning........then i brought it to the shop the replaced the pump now it is hard to turn the wheel and is even louder than before........if anybody has any tips id be more the happy to hear them

Could be that the fluid is not being circlated. Can you see the fluid being pumped when you open the cap. The folks at the shop should have made sure that it is working properly before they claimed the job done. Take it back and let them know its not working and they should fix it.

Yeah, take it back. It sounds like the oil is not being circulated properly. Problem may lie in the steering box. Was this a Ford dealership that attempted to repair it?

I worked for a Napa Auto Care center, and a lot of people complain about Explorers Rack and Pinions and power steering. We had an Explorer in there with a problem that at idle and only in drive would the noise be made, and I believe it had a vibration. We replaced the whole rack and pinion and I believe it was fixed. Also - I was test driving an Explorer one day, and it had a lot of steering bump. You'd turn it (especially in reverse) and it would make the steering wheel shake. I'm hoping and knocking on wood, that my steering components don't feel like drop out on me. But good luck with your problem! It could be the rack and pinon.

Note: first generation Explorers did NOT use a steering rack/pinion. They have steering boxes.

Oh, well then - I thought we were talking about the 2nd gens. Sorry about that nonsense. But yeah, the two Explorers that were in the shop were like a 2000 and a 98! Sorry!

brought it back..........new pump works great.......not i can hear my super 40 without a damn whine backin it up
