extra storage space on a 1st Gen.

The fins on the amp need to go up to dissipate heat, if you put it upside down then the heat comes back to the amp, not good....

It will be fine...I've seen plenty mounted like that. It's not going to matter if it's upside down...

You're the first one to tell me that, all of the research I did before doing this:
DSCF0372.jpg

told me otherwise, it's in an enclosed space and it is upside down, so to be safe I'd recomend to turn it right side up, but is up to him

its upside down because the power wire going to the battery is to short to put it right side up

Hmmm too bad my amp is just too big... It's not as tall so it's extra wide... I always have my seats folded down so right now it's in the little hole under the plate where the seat would be if it was up. I just have to move it if I want to use the rear seats.
I'm going to try fitting my big dual 10's in later, maybe I'll take pics.

it could probably fit with a little modification

I think you should be fine mounting the amp any way up, its just solid state electronics. If you couldn't the manual should say otherwise....
Just don't cover it up too much with the panels.

As to the actual mod, if you pry out the panel you WILL snap the tabs that are on the back of the ****-bin. The tabs are little plastic loops and the fasteners are plastic wedges. They can't be popped out by any kind of prying from the front. To remove them without breaking them you have to remove the entire inside panel so you can stick your arm back there to pop them out.

There is tons of room back there, on the driver's side where the jack is I stuffed in two ratchet straps, and spare belt (under the 4x4 module) and a first aid kit and some hand warmers near the jack.

To do this mod right, I think you need a door where the panel was (see idea below) and some type of plug up over the wheel well because if you shove stuff over it will slide down into the abyss on the other side.

Door idea: Go to the junkyard and cut a piece of matching gray plastic from a flat area of a panel out to fit where the hole is, get some small hinges and rivet them to one side, and make a latch with a knob and a piece of springy steel that can be turned to latch it shut. (this makes sense in my head, IDK if I'm explaining it well enough)

My addition to this idea is (well in a sport anyway) to cut an access door below the rear ashtray. You would have to make some kind of liner to prevent stuff from falling into the side of the body or seatbelt mechanism, but there is tons of space in there too, you could get a fire extinguisher and some ropes or whatever else in there.

I'm just scared to cut up my interior, so I haven't done it yet...

the instructions do say not to mount it upside down, crutchfield says that too, my installer told me the same thing, the idea is that heat tends to go up, so if you put the fins downwards, the heat that they are trying to get rid of, will come back to the amp.

Anyway, I have 2 ratchets, 1 extension and god knows what else in the "abyss" in my 97, I'll have to take the pannel off to take a look inside...

on my amp the heat fins are just holes on the opposite side of the wires so it shouldn't matter if its right side up or up side down, the holes will just be on a different side. The manual doesn't say anything about mounting it upside down

This is true if the amp is horizontal, his amp is vertical. He should not have a problem.

Easy way is to take the speaker out and stick your arm in there, just watch yourself there's lots of sharp metal bits. An inspection mirror might be helpful.

The mounting is model specific. Thers no rule of thumb.

Except don't set the amp on fire. That's a good rule of thumb to go by.

hehehe

ill just use it to hide a few brews!

Naughty, naughty. :nono: :hammer:
