I know this is an extremly dumb question, but since Ive only had the X (my first car) for about 3 weeks Ill ask it anyways.

How do I tell if its Overhead Valve or SOHC? I had it at a mechanic shop yesterday (needed a new fan belt) and I asked him and he looked at me crazy.....Oh Well.....HOW DO I KNOW?

On the top of the engine, the plastic peice should say EFI 4.0, or it should say 4.0 SOHC. I think the OHV died out in the middle of 1997, so i think you should have a SOHC.

EFI = OHV
SOHC = SOHC

The OHV continued for awhile longer, but I am not sure how long. I think it was around '00.

alright thanks yall. I checked (and nearly drowned, (sp?) damn rain) and it said 4.0 EFI, so i guess its a overhead valve.

Thanks for the quick responses yall.

the 2001 was the last year of the ohv they came in the sport tracs

hey dropped.. are you sure you have an xlt and not the xls? i didnt think xlts came with ohvs after 96, only the sports with manuals and the xls.

Nope. All Sport Tracs got the SOHC.
