I spent the weekend puling the trans on the f-350 to replace the torque converter. What a PITA. It was less work that an Ex since I didn't have to remove the exhaust Y pipe, but that trans and t-case is damn heavy. Now to make matters worse, it looks like my tranny cooler bypass went south too. This is sucking $$$'s out of my rear 4 link rear and front hiems for the radius arms on the Ex..

As much as I hate to say it, it's time for a dodge tow rig

That sux, Kev. Are you gonna spend the $$$ on a Banks or another stocker? And no you can't go down to my brother's and steal mine.

After further research, if you replace the stocker TC with an aftermarket one, the increased torque multiplication will eventually damage the tranny. Therefore, I went with another stocker. I wanted to just get an entire aftermarket tranny from BD or ATS, but the wallet wasn't having the over $4000 price. So I went with a stocker. It's up and running now, but now there is low flow through the coolers and fluid is pooring out of the rear port of the tranny. From everything I've read, that indicates a bad cooler bypass valve(CBV). Anyway, long story short, I caught the TC failure in time to not destroy the rest of the tranny, but now I have to replace the CBV, but I am thinking that the eliminator that BD sells is probably a better way to go.

That CBV is junk IMO. So it'll take a little longer for your trans fluid to heat up to temp. It beats having hot tranny fluid being recycled thru.

Bah, you should of bought a 6spd.. which costs more to replace than the automatic if the blasted thing dies..

Yeah, but we're to lazy to row our own gears. And if the 6 speeds are anything like driving these old Kaiser 2.5 tons and the newer 5 ton trucks, then I wouldn't want one. Although our Kia and Daewoo 60 person and Mitsubishi 30 person buses are fun and easy 5 speeds to drive; except they put the damn reverse in the wrong spot.

No, the 6spd is nothing like the old deuce-and-half's I remember driving in the 80's..

It's not a speed daemon to shift, but it is also nice to have that hand massager in the cab.

Ordered the BD-CBV eliminator yesterday. It was half the price of replacing the factory CBV and ensures all fluid flows through the cooler, ultimately keeping the tranny cooler. The only draw back is if I ever go to a -20 degree climate, I'll have to switch back to the stock setup as the tranny fluid will gel in the coolers and not lubricate the back half of the tranny. I'll just avoid the cold weather :D

Installed the CBV bypass today and it seems to have worked. Took it for a test drive, the same I did a few days ago after replacing the TC and the tranny stayed right at about 140 instead of increasing to 180 and still climbing. Even though 180 isn't that bad, this is only a 5 mile long test drive with a 10 minute stop at a store and a rather long and steep grade in the second leg. On the first tet drive, the tranny reached 180 and was still climbing even after the end of the hill and never cooled the 1.5 miles back to the house. Today, it got up to a max of 140 and started cooling down before I got half way (.75m) back to the house. I am very :D :D :D with those results. I'll take t for a longer drive later.
