Now don't laugh, it's a serious question. My new explorer is still under warranty, so I cant add any parts....yet. But would it be stupid to add those (fake) hood scoops to my truck ? Just tell it like it is.

I think it depends on how well it's done, if your doing it yourself and you don't work at a body shop, forget it.

If you are going to put them on yourself do some homework first. Find out how to do it right, take your time and do your best. All you really have to please is yourself. After all, if pople can drive around in those matchbox ricers and be happy, you have an EXPLORER!

I'm for go not show. I've added a set for real on mine just because it kept operating temp lower with the KKM on. It wasn't too difficult to make them functional either. Otherwise what's the point? I don't really think it adds as much good looks to the truck.

Dannys right, function over form.
If they dont work they are kinda stupid.
I also despise those Lund tape ons, very tacky.

Voted they'd be stupid... i agree as above. Like the new mustangs with their fake scoops.. they do nothing.. shouldn't be there

Sure they do something... add wind resistance and slow you down.... waste of money unless they are real.

Ouch

I was going to vote It's ok. While I believe in functionality over looks, I'm not about to run out and spend $600 on a hood, and $80 + paint for a set of Lunc stick on crap would make me happy.

How did you do that? I have heard of people drilling their hoods so that the scoops were actualy functional. Did you use the lund ones or is there an alternative/something better?

There are a ton of Ranger custom hoods out there with scoops. 88-92 Ranger and 89-90 BII hoods are interchangeable with 91-94 Explorer hoods.

What about Second Gen?

Word dude, sweet.

Even a "functional" hoods scoop won't do anything but allow more of the elements to get on your engine. Cooling effect = next to 0, and ram air would be too hard to set up. Either way your basically just trying to impress people.
If you need to spend that money to make yourself feel better, go ahead. But try to understand what your doing first.

I agree with Danny and a few others. Yeah, I know we all have done and will do some things that are purely cosmetic like window tint, light covers, vinyl graphics and etc. But in my opinion, if you are going to install a hood scoop, make it functional and have the ponies to back up the look.

I have a custom intake and the battery is blocking it from the grill. I hoped having the scoops would let more air in since it would be an alternate path for airflow because like you said, a ram air would be way more difficult. The hood is much lighter and looks really nice because the inlet's are really small and dont stand out, im not trying to impress ppl. Just thought current airflow was lacking due to the obstructed path of air flow. Is this correct or should I find other ways to spend money and make myself feel better?
