it certainly isnt an engine knock, i have a car that has that.

it seems like only on the highway i hear these really fast ticks coming from the dash-area. i can not pin point where exactly or where its coming from. i wish i could sit in the engine bay at 60+ MPH, LOL.

any known issues like this that im not aware of?

it is most deffintly 60+, if that

most roads in town are 45, and cruising at a good 55, i cannot hear it.

if it IS the valves.. what does this mean? replacement? not yet? quick fix? leave it be?

you could just leave it, it might need a little tune-up, that's all. A lot of these explorers have it. Try cleaning your MAF sensor, it is said to help some. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just search it.

ya im thinking weak valve spring or lifter plugged up how many miles on your trk ??

very well could be the speedometer. mine does the same thing at highway (65+) speeds, but not so much around town.

I'll 2nd the speedometer.

So far mine's sounded like a squealing fan belt and horrible valve clatter.

Dont overlook it.

I get a ticking if I punch the gas hard close to or at highway speeds. Doesn't do it constantly though. I've been hearing it for over a year now. I just keep oil in it and try to stay off the gas pedal.

speedometer is possibility, it is accurate, but jumpy at the higher speeds.

ive just done a tuneup including seafoam, but ive yet to do it in the intake yet
my X has high miles but only around 50k on my jasper motor/trans

I'll 3rd spedo. Mine does this only when cold at freeway speeds, jumps a bit, then when it's nice and toasty in the car, it seems to go away and registers the speed okay.

by the time you get on the highway your truck should pretty much be warm.. i dont think this ticking has anything to do the with the speedo. the only reason i say so is because its a little jumpy at certain speeds, but even when its not, i can hear tickticktickticktick

When you hear it, try speeding up and see if it goes away or stays.

slow down= go away
speed up = no.

recently this hasnt been a problem for some reason

If it were the speedo, you might want to check into replacing the cable. The splines on it could be wearing out and starting to skip. I 4th the speedo, since it's a lot cheaper to fix than the valves...

I HIGHLY doubt its the Spedo. My 93 does the exact same thing, Im on this forum to find out what it is. I WOULD SAY that the noise is coming from the drive-line, perhaps the gearing that sends power to the 4x4. my tucks 4x4 doesn't work now, but i still hear the noise at high speed. I think thats when its the loudest, but i bet when your next to a wall or in a tunnel you can hear it even at lower speeds. SO what down there could be worn out? U-joints? Differential?...what causes the CLATTER?!?

just guessing here but maybe the chain in the transfer case being worn out or a damaged transfercase unit. as far as the other ...the speedo issue....mine does make a chatter like noise as well when going over 65 mph ( thats when it really starts to hop around on the dial as well )and or it could be a bad pushrod slapping around in the valvetrain (with the lack of length on the push rod it could be bashing into a rocker arm (tickticktick)

...just my 2 cents :salute:
