Hey everyone, I thought I'd try out some dyanamat stuff on my doors because every time I had the car running I could hear the music just as loud outside as I could inside. So I jumped on ebay and ordered some Fatmat. Have to say the stuff will make your house stink if you leave it sitting around.

So I decided to do the back doors today, tore the panels off and jumped to it! After about 2hrs of fun I'm done w/the rear. Just have to install my old Eclipse speakers when I get home!

Anyway, I took some pics but I have to eat some food right now so I'll post them in about an hour or so!

BTW, anyone else have dynamat or anything of the like in their vehicle?

Alright, here we go for the pics... see if I still remember how to do this!

Here's a couple more, the old "damping" stuff, speaker installed, and the junk in my trunk!

My wife's car and both Exploders have it. I just got through doing all of "Mud Pit" with FatMat. The 100-sq. ft. FatPak was enough to do all four doors, two layers on the rear hatch, two layers in the cargo area floor, behind the plastic panels in the cargo area, one layer on the floorboards (front and rear) and one layer under the headliner. (I needed help with removing and reinstalling the headliner so as not to mess it up.) Additionally, the liquid sound deadener was sprayed on the inside of the doors (by someone other than me so as to avoid a disastrous mess). When you get in and shut the doors, the silence is almost painful. :D

FatMat - Great stuff at only a buck a square foot. Stinks for about a week, though.

PS: Now that you've done all your doors, you do know that this is when a window motor will konk out on you, don't you? ;)

Haha, yeah, no kidding. I can see that happening definitely. But I only have the rear does done as of right now. I'm gonna wait on the fronts until I build my crossover to throw my new Eclipse 5x7's in. But my last Explorer had the passenger window motor die, as long as it's not my driver's side front!!! ;)

Gimp is right 3 months after i did dynamating my back driver's side window motor went out. Trust me now that you did some parts of your truck you will find other areas that let out sound and let road noise in.

Thanks!

Well I did the rest of the vehicle tonight! Just finished, another 3 hours worth of fun! Got the front doors done and also the rear hatch, double bagged that one :D I can already notice a difference just sitting in the vehicle. Gotta take some pics tomorrow, also have to build some crossovers after work so I can install my front Eclipse Point Source 5x7s!! I'm excited, if only this was my job...

Also tried to get some spray sound deadener and couldn't find it anywhere. This place is SO isolated, they have nothing!!!

If you do get some spray-on or brush-on sound deadener for the insides of the door skins, don't plug up the drain holes in the bottom of the door.

Very true. I also did behind all of the plasic trim in the pillars, kick panels, and door posts. About the only thing I didn't do was the firewall above where the carpet stops (because the dash and all that stuff behind it was in the way.

It's amazing how much of a difference it makes when you hit all the nooks and crannies. Since Mud Pit got FatMat under the headliner too, I went out tonight during a rain storm and sat in it just to listen to the tremendous difference it made in the sound of heavy rain on the roof. Instead of a heavy pitter patter, it was more like a very light tapping.

That's pretty cool man. I only bought the 36 sq. ft package b/c all I really wanted to do for now was the doors. I figure if I have some extra money and time this summer I'll do the rest of the vehicle and split a 100 sq. ft pack w/someone. It'd be nice to get the whole thing done definitely, but it's amazing how just the doors make a difference.

Exactly what drain holes are you talking about? The ones on the actual metal door? B/c I don't see any on the panels.

Yes, the drain holes in the bottom of the metal door. These let the water that gets past the window and down into the door drain out so that the bottoms of the doors don't rust out.

Another thing: You're probably going to appreciate how much better your A/C will seem to be working at keeping the interior cool this summer now that you'll have the doors so well insulated.

Hey! Never thought of it that way... man, if I was still a wee lad I could have easily coaxed my parents into letting me buy this with all of these great selling points:
keeps your car cooler in summer
makes you A/C work better
kills road noise

What a great product :D

does anyone know if putting on two layers will help? or do nothing? and can you use regular dynamat for the engine hood?

I read somewhere that using regular dynamat to line the hood is a BAD idea. I think that it is not engineered for that kind of heat really. That's what I read anyway.

And as far as doubling the amount you put on, it does help the damping a noticeable amount.

don't use regular dynamat for the hood it is not made for that kind of heat. They have a different product that is called dynaliner which is used for under the hood it is about $50. You wont have to double layer with dynamat thourgh out the vehicle it is already thick enough. With the other brands you may have to since it is somewhat thinner. I double layered the cargo door since that is really the only area that really gets abuse from the sub. Either way "just" doing this period is a night to day comparision it makes a huge difference.

my x is pretty much covered with a layer of dynamat. it is pretty much soundproofed from noise from the outside, except through the windows maybe a bit of noise comes in. i have tons of dynamat left, and was wondering if putting another layer would be better.. but maybe ill just do my cargo area again, and leave the regular doors alone. thanks.

I have that exact same tool set. :D

Looks good, btw!

Looks good, is that 2 different subs I see in the back?

Yeah, and neither are technically "mine" anymore. The Eclipse 87121 (12") is a sub and box I built to put in my sister's car. But since I'm in International Falls, MN, and she's at Central Michigan University, it's kinda hard. So I get to play w/it for a bit!

I'm going home for Easter and I'm gonna throw it in her 98 Intrepid along w/my JL 5 1/4's.

The other one is a JL 10W6 in a ported box that I built; this was my sub for the past 2yrs or so. I liked it a lot but just wanted something more. So that one's going in my friend's Jeep Grand Cherokee over Easter.

So you're probably wondering where my sub is? Well, that day I ended up wiring it in the box w/10awg speaker wire and put a terminal cup on it too. Mine's an Eclipse SW8102.4 (10") and it's absolutely amazing!!! I've personally never heard a better single subwoofer. I had it wired in parallel with the other eclipse for awhile and it's musical bliss!

But anyway, that answers the question of why there are multiple subs in the back
