I searched around and it seems this is a fairly common problem but it keeps getting worse in my 98 X. It used to be just when I was turning left into a parking place, then it started happening on the road I take to leave work, there is a big dip in the road right before the stop sign, now it seems to be doing on practically every stop when you get down to about 5mph or less. Shocks and brakes are new, Sensa trac's for shocks not the greatest but less than 8k on them I wouldnt think they'd be letting the tire loose contact with the road on minor stuff, plus the problem got much much worse after a couple trips up to Detroit driving on those craptacular roads ;). so hopefully its just something loose???
I'm thinking a sensor or tone ring but if anyone has any pointers, pics, or resolved this issue themselves I would really appreciate it! I'll probably be yanking off the tires in a about an hour, hopefully I'll find it but I'm not the greatest with brake stuff, and I havent really had to work on the 98 a whole lot so I'm not real familiar with it either. Or is there a quick way to disable ABS? If nothing else I can run like that for a while until I figure it out, would be better than rear ending someone when the brakes start acting goofy!

Any help appreciated, thanks!!

Didnt see anything out of the ordinary so I just yanked the fuse for the ABS for now, I'd like to fix it correctly at some point though so anything to help let me know!

This same exact thing was happening on my 99. What it ended up being was the front right abs sensor.

Only thing about this sensor is that you cannot buy it alone, it comes with the wheel hub, but I found a guy here on the forum...ped5stang, sold me one for 20$.

Ive actually just had the sensor unhooked for a couple of months now because I was just too lazy to change it out in the snow but today I went out and pulled the wheel off and fixed it up.

The sensor is real easy to find:

Once you pull the wheel off you will see one single wire that goes from behind the right side of rotor and then is hooked up onto the frame by some clips and runs up towards the bumper.

To get at isnt very difficult either.

Take off the wheel
Unbolt and remove the caliper.
Unbolt and remove the caliper mounting bracket.
Pull off the rotor.
Take out the 3 screws on the metal shield that sits behind the rotor.

You should now be able to get right at the sensor. It takes an allen wrench to get out. When I pulled mine out it was pretty difficult and it acutally ended up breaking the casing around the sensor and I had to chip it out of the little hole with a screw driver.

Ive read about ways to actually test the sensor but never actually did it because I knew which one it was(had to change the other sides wheel hub when the baring went and it included the new sensor)

Anyways good luck.
