I just purchased a 2001 SOHC 4.0 4X4 XLT. I have been told 3 different towing capacities (5750, 6000, 5100 lbs...). Being just the SOHC 4.0, I will not pull more than 3200 Lbs. I am looking to purchase a 21ft travel trailer and need this answered and a few more questions.

1. Where is the cheapest place to purchase towing parts (Hitch, etc...) Already have a Tranny Cooler Installed.

2. Towing Capacity (Obviously)

3. What is everything needed to get me ready to pull this camper maybe 1000 miles a year (3-4 trips a year)

4. Best brands to buy

I did a search for the towing capacity, but came up with other year numbers, not 2001. This is my first time at this site and first post. If this is one of those topics that has been discussed to death, tell me and I will delete it.

Thanks,

Rich

I can answer some of your questions...

1. For wiring, get the plug adapter that simply plugs into the factory wiring harness. You can do it yourself. The only problem you would have is if you get electric brakes on the trailer, you might as well take it to a trailer shop to hook up.

2. The capacity is on the sticker on the drivers side door jamb, or in the owners manual.

3. You might want to check all fluids before a trip, as well as making sure the spare tires(X and trailer) are inflated properly.

4.There are some good brands:
Hidden hitch
Reese
Draw tight

Welcome to the site....:)

To know your towing capacity you need to know a) your axle ratio, b) your engine size, c) transmission type, d) number of doors and e) 4x4 or 2x4. You answered most of these questions (SOHC, automatic, 4-door & 4x4). All you need now is the axle ratio. With this inrformation, your Owner's Manual will tell you your tow rating.
