1998 Explorer Eddie Bauer
Hello! I just purchased a 1998 Explorer Eddie Bauer Ed. I got a good price on it and so far I have found very few things that require any sort of major work.

One of the things that I want to do right away is change the transmission fluid. I noticed before I purchased it that the fluid was old. It's a very light brown color and very transparent. It has a slight smell to it but nothing near what I've experienced on burned/warn transmissions. I'm assuming that it has rarely, if ever been changed (with 175k miles on the vehicle).

First question: I read on a couple of sites that this transmission holds 9.5q of Mercon V oil. Is 9.5q correct? I did read somewhere that it was 5q and elsewhere that is was 13q. I want to get the correct level before I start. I've purchased 10q so far.

Second question: Is it necessary to change the xfer case oil or the rear axle lubricant?

Third question: I think I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway...My speedometer intermittently stops working. The Cruise Ctrl continues to work, and the vehicle shifts perfectly into O/D and other gears however. I read somewhere that the speed sensor on the rear differential is the same sensor that manages the speedometer, the ABS, the o/d and other speed-related things...if that were the case then one would think that all of this would be affected if it were bad and not just the speedometer. So my question is, IS THERE another module on the vehicle that monitors speed for the speedometer and if so WHERE is it? I've seen so many different opinions on this that all conflict.

Thanks!
