How do I find if my 98 explorer came with a factory alarm ?? I do have the keypad on the door ???? I know my other explorer alarm activates when you press the lock button but when I tried it nothing happened .. If there is no alarm on there what should I go with or stay away from ???

When you lock the vehicle, do you get a flashing red LED on the dash?? Put down the driver's window, lock with the remote, then reach inside and open the driver's door - does the horn blow and the lights flash? I would think that any Explorer with a high enough trim level to have a keypad would have had the factory alarm system. Good luck.

i believe the '98 would have come with PATS. follow bobfloods suggestion for checking it. even my '97 came with an OE alarm, but is re-PATS.

The problem is that I got the truck as a impound and only got the keys ..... So I have no remote to try .. But I am trying to figure which mod is the factory alarm to see if it was unhook or something.. Also I forgot someone had installed a aftermarket alarm in it and did such a bad job its not funny and I wonder if they unhooked the factory alarm??? Oh when I press the lock button and clothes the doors the theif light stays red on the dash and blinks when unlocked ??? Hope it helps

do you have a flashing "THEFT" light on the instrument cluster? it should flash about every 2 seconds. if it has PATS (which it should being a '98) you can buy a remote on ebay for around $6 and programming is easy. i bought 2 remotes and an extra RF security key for $17 including shipping. they work great.

also, if it has the key-pad on the driver's door you can get the factory 5-digit code off the RAP module's sticker.

That works only if you have two original keys. If you have just one key, it's a $100 dealer programming charge.

yes, but i only had one original key. i had my Ford dealer program it for me. cost $40 (second time i've done this, same price). not being stuck after losing my one original key - priceless.

you can also get your one original key "cloned" at Ace Hardware or Walmart, but that cost more.

If you have the keypad on the door, I'm 99% sure you have an alarm and keyless entry, since the keypad operates off the RAP module, which is the 'alarm' module.

Read over this thread, you'll know everything you've ever wondered about it and then some.. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195398

this is true, but just because you don't have the key-pad doesn't mean you don't have a RAP module.

that's because it's an XL. i've never even seen one of those. did it come with carpet or the rubber mat? i believe the XL was supposed to be a fleet vehicle.

Mine was oddly a semi-fully loaded XL. It had everything that could come in an XL.
Of course, carpet..
Power everything, premium radio, and 4x4.
Mind you, I added tons of stuff.. Autolamps, overhead console, long console with rear heat/AC.
But I don't want to highjack the thread. :)
