2018 Explorer XLT
Hey everyone, new to this forum because I just got a black 2017 Ford Explorer XLT. I'm looking to make some modifications to it and was looking for any experienced intel on what I should maybe do.
Modifications I'm potentially interested in investing in include:
- Interior (Floor mats/cup holder trim packages, replace cloth seats, etc)
- New rims
- Replace chrome grill/Ford emblem with black
- Aftermarket exhaust? lol I don't know
Any help is appreciated. I'd love to make this an awesome explorer with your guys' help. Thanks

I did Husky weather beater mats front to back. Complete led bulbs interior and exterior (license plate, puddle lamps only). Tinted front windows and sun strip. Ceramic coating on paint. Vynil wrapped interior fake wood trim on doors and glove box.

If your xlt doesn't have heated seat inserts, you can buy them on Amazon for 45.00 with pads and switches for 2 seats and diy. Ive done in in 4 vehicles and enjoyed all of em, just as good as oem for far much less cost.

Awesome, love the look of it, definitely going to look into it!

While I'm typically a 1st Gen Explorer person, my brother just picked up a 2019 last summer.

The mods I helped him with so far are...

  • LED high beams - his came with LED low beams and sealed beam high beams (SEALIGHT Scoparc 9005/HB3 LED Headlight Bulbs 12000LM Conversion Kit, but I had to use side cutters to modify the tabs on the bulbs)
  • Tune from 5Star - He can feel the difference and if he just floors the throttle it will end up spinning the tires near the 1-2 shift which it wouldn't do before.
  • Installed the OEM hitch cover in the rear bumper
  • Used Forscan to enable the remote control of the auto up & down of the front windows (he loves this feature)
  • Used Forscan to enable bambi mode (fog lights stay on with high beams)
Hopefully those are useful.

Welcome to the Forum Jerry.
I also recommend the Husky Liners. Although the WeatherTech liners are also good, they don't have that lip that covers the door sill as shown in picture #5. I believe the Huskys front liners also have better 'dead pedal' coverage.
The first 'mod' I always do to all my vehicles is adding the small 2" convex mirror to both outside mirrors. :)

Had bad luck with weathertech in my sienna and explorer. Curling and the thing that holds them in place are junk. Two sets.....

Forscan rocks...

I added Bambi mode for the Fogs to stay on with Brights, added temp display to the right side IPC, disabled lowbeams during daytime, now using Only Signature DRL Outline on. Added heated and cooled buttons to the touchscreen Homescreen & Heated Wheel icon.

Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket exhausts? I know it's an XLT and not a Sport but I was looking into a Gibson exhaust to get more of throaty rumble rather than that stock hum. Hoping it'd be worth the money.

Its a 6 cylinder most will sound raspy and obnoxious. Stock, these sound better outside the car than inside. Do what you please but they are no v8 mustang.

Jerry,
I added a Gibson exhaust to my 1997 Explorer SOHC and was disappointed with both the sound and the rust-out that occurred quite quickly. I'm in eastern Washington State and I haven't experienced exhaust system degredation at this rate on other vehicles. Just my 2 cents. I replaced the single outlet Gibson with a true dual Magnaflow system and was pleased with the outcome. I lost the ability to store the spare under the vehicle but for me, that wasn't an issue.

Whatever you do decide to do, steer clear of Livernois...run away fast...
Not trying to get into a p***ing contest here, but I added Livernois lowering springs to my 2015 Sport and these have worked great. They installed easily, didn't require any vehicle modifications and tech help from Livernois was superb. I would buy from them again.

Except all you did was buy H&R springs at a higher cost. Bet you didn't know that, did you? They are literally rebranded H&R springs. Livernois makes NOTHING...they purchase the rights to others components, slap their label on it and sell it at a premium. Newsflash...ALL springs for our platform mount with no vehicle modification, so there's nothing special there.

That shop is a clown show and if you do some research, you'll discover it too. Hey, I drank the Kool-aid myself, but discovered the truth along the way. Trust me, do yourself a favor and steer clear. If you are interested in any sort of upgrade I can give you a list of tons of places to go besides them. They aren't doing ANYTHING that any other reputable ecoboost shop/tuner isn't already doing...you'll just pay more. They have a GREAT marketing department. They can't even go on the SHO forums anymore as they will get shunned out of the room. That community is hip to their BS. So now they bring it here because they think Explorer owners aren't as savvy in the performance arena.

It's ok, I'm not trying to insult you or turn this into something personal between you and I, you just fell for their marketing ploy. It's not your fault. I take their business model personal though as I feel it's predatory and I try to educate the Explorer community as much as possible on all the other options available to them. Their marketing budget has proven they can "appear" to be some sort of industry leader...when the truth is so much the opposite.

But hey, spend your money how you wish...

Where did you find the information on Forscan to enable those settings? I got in it today for the first time and was so confused. It is not setup like the app I have for my jeep wrangler where I can change settings, easily.

I agree, let's not take this out on each other. BUT - I did the research and knew full well that the spring set was H&R. I talked with both companies. At the time, I was able to save a few bucks going with LIvernois versus other sources. I suspect that's not the case today.
Okay I'll take you up on your offer. So if I buy a tuner kit for a performance increase to my 2015 Ecoboost 3.5, give me some recommendations on brands and sources.

Ok, tune...now you're speaking my language. There are so many different ways to address tuning. 99% of people want more power, but with more power comes lower fuel economy, generally speaking. But there is such a thing as a fuel economy tune and any tuner worth their weight can provide one, if that's your thing. The ecoboost lends itself to tuning very well and there is A LOT of power Ford left on the table...for a number of reasons.

Anyway, get yourself either an SCT or HPTUNER device and open yourself up to quite a few reputable ecoboost tuners. Keep in mind, for our platform, there are no tables that are inaccessible on either system. That being said, most tuners currently use SCT for our platform but the HPTuner device has been up and coming and their user-interface is much better than the SCT. Both can get you where you want to go. Just ensure you get yourself a 3bar MAP sensor as you'll need it to exceed any more than about 15psi or so (stock is 11-12). Good thing is, you can jump between tuner shops at your leisure with either brand device (for instance you can have a tune from GearHead and AJP on the same device and switch between the 2). Another added bonus is both have datalogging capability, which can be beneficial when troubleshooting issues. If you ever decide you are unhappy with the tuning shop, you can easily jump to another one without having to buy a whole new device. Which is a major downfall with Livernois tunes. They use a "proprietary" device that makes sure you're locked into only them as a tuner. If you want to go with another shop, you've just made yourself a paperweight with their device...no one uses it. Not to mention you cannot datalog with their device nor will they accept your datalog should you find a way to get one and want them to tweak your tune...they won't do it.

As for reputable tuners...this is no particular order, but here are top 3 IMHO:

1) Brad at AJP Turbo
2) Torrie at Unleashed
3) Matt at GearHead

Honorable mention as I have no personal experience, but come recommended by others:

4) Lee at Ortiz Performance
5) Brew City Boost
6) 5 Star Tuning

They all use SCT and a few of them also us HPTuner, so options are endless.

Notice Livernois doesn't even break the top 6 list, but there's a ton of other reasons...so please, please, please stay away from them.

And this just covers tuning...don't get me started on actual aftermarket parts. Let me know if there is any particular Livernois parts you're interested in and its likely I can point you to a better option.

Put it like this. I'm on track to set the world record for the 5th gen explorer in the 1/4 mile here soon...and I don't have a single Livernois part on my rig...
