I'd give Flowtech a call before ordering them. One thing is they might not be available anymore. Another thing is that there should be some difference in the 96-97 and 98+ headers. Them saying 96-00 is a little worrying. Flowtech's website is not working for me right now, and there might be more info about them on it.

I'm sure its worth giving them a ring though.

Yeah I e-mailed the website that I linked asking for info about them.

I also couldn't get into Flowtechs website.

What exaclty is different between the 96-97 and 98+? Is the differance the Heads (GT-40p) and also needing the EGR bung?

Z~

Yeah.. the heads are a little different, but both will home the same headers. Infact, I have '96 headers on my GT40P Heads. The EGR bung is the only problem.

Here is a pic of the stock GT40P manifolds (notice the bung in the lower left corner of the pic).

i will believe this only when i see pics of a set mounted on a V8 explorer. Zmuzic- im not doubting you, i just find it hard to believe that all these years of thousands of members searching for headers that they were right there the whole time. on a side note- flowtech is rather well known for not having the most accurate application guides. try to get ahold of them, if this is true than it will revolutionize the entire 5 liter explorer market.

i wouldnt hold my breath, though.:)

Ymuzic, please let us know what you find out when and if you get a reply. If you recieve good feedback, I'd be very tempted to order a set. I'd just make sure I'd be able to return them though if they dont fit. I can weld in a bung for my 99. Stock 89 GT headers over stock manifolds made a huge difference on my 5.0 T-Bird.

Section525, how hard would FMS headers be to install without taking everything apart? Passenger side mainly.
I have only installed headers with the motor being pulled, so I have no idea with the motor still being in it.

Ford Racing catalog shows '96 only headers. You can call them and ask why. They told me mustang headers would not fit, even the gt40P headers (Different spark plug angle for '98 up Xpl).

They tell you only '96 because that was the only year that had ONLY non external EGR manifolds. '97 had both and '98+ had only external (meaning you need the bung on the header).

OK got a responce from them. To tell you the truth I don't know if they know what they're talking about...lol I'm going to try and call them DOES GIBSON make headers for the Explorer I didn't come up with anything. Anyway here is the e-mail I sent and responce.

(responce)

Both of the part numbers you have given us will not fit your application.(They did not say why though, so maybe they will fit an earlier X and ultimately fit mine)
And at this time the only header we have is from gibson and the cost of this
header is $499.99 (maybe they are confused with a set for a six cyl.)

Thanks

to chime in on a post I have no idea how old it is (I had 793 unread posts since my last visit)

the pics posted there.. are you SURE those are correct? I have a GTP stamping on my heads, and my headers look like the 2nd pic section has posted there, not the 1st. I know this cos of the rathre obvious crossover on the driver side pipes on the 2nd cylinder.

I have a "bung" (I dont like that word lol) welded into the passenger side pipe right above cyl #3 on that side.

DarkFox - I know that they used the cast iron and steel manifolds throughout the GT40 and GT40P years. So either one could be on any Explorer. The main difference I was trying to show was the EGR "b*ng". :D

PS - I PM'd you back! :D

oh.. I C, thakns for the clarification

how do i tell GT-40 heads from GT-40P heads??? thanks for help

On the head there will be a stamp. Either "GT" or GTP". If you look in front of the passenger side number one spark plug, you should see the stamp. If you have a '98 you have the Ps.

thanks for the help on that.....i have edlebrocks heads on my x now but i was wondering what the originals were, i knew they where one or the other....btw when did they switch to "p" 's instead of the regular "GT-40" heads....just wondering thanks....

the swtich was done in mid 97 as far as I know.
