Fluctuating Gas Gauge

The gas gauge in my explorer fluctuates way to much(from 1/8 to 1/6 of a tank). Is there any way to fix this?

That doesn't seem like much

I know my 97 has quite a long time constant. When I park down hill, it will read almost empty and 5 minutes later it will read 1/2. These are long tanks front to back, compared with some other vehicles where they are typically longer sise to side, and any angle can change the level quite a bit.
